-by Chris Hall (in response to They Nickel and Dime Us to Death) Your points about Jamar Fletcher are valid. However, often times we as fans look only at the symptom and not the root of the problems. Jamar Fletcher is a very gifted athlete with unquestionable athletic skills which warranted him being selected in the first round of the 2001 draft. What often time separates average players from exceptional players is the coaching that they receive. The reason Jamar Fletcher has struggled is because he has received terrible coaching from his position coach, Bill Lewis, Defensive Nickel Package Coach. Bill Lewis has no business coaching NFL defensive backs. He is a an example of how the NFL is a "Good Old Boy Network" and they will hire someone they know and keep him around, regardless of competency. Bill Lewis was hired by Jimmy Johnson in 1996 despite never coaching in the NFL. He was hired since they coached together at University of Arkansas in the 70s. Bill Lewis in 1995 was the Athletic Director of an Atlanta private school. From 1992-1994 he took over as Head Coach a team that a year before had finished undefeated and won the 1990 National Championship and within 4 years had it finish 0-11! You really have to strive for failure to achieve that. Don't you think a former player like J.B. Brown could maybe do just as good as this bum? All he can claim is that he knows coach Johnson and yet 7 years later he is still here, and the Miami nickel defense is terrible. The starting CBs are year in, year out amongst the league's best so you figure Mel Phillips is doing his job...Bill Lewis MUST GO! Back
