Offseason Overview

-by Brian McCartney

The Miami Dolphins need an offensive line, simple as that. When the O-line actually gives Fiedler more than two seconds tothrow the ball something good usually happens. Bringing in AJ Feeley will be no different. If the offensive line can't do their job, neither can the quarterback.

As for the rest of the offense, I have one word: production. Guys dropping balls, missing blocks, runs that should be pounded up the middle being taken to the outside, and running out of bounds on a 3rd and 6 after only a three yard gain instead of being a man and earning your pay by taking it upfield have plagued the Fins ever since I can remember. It's time to change that.

My next complaint goes to the coaching staff. After week three all the teams in the NFL knew the Fins were going to run the ball on first and second down. How about some play action every once in a while. Fielder can run as well, why not bootleg him out to protect him for more than two seconds. The Dolphins play calling was the most predictable I've seen in my football watching career. Even my 76 year old, nearly blind grandfather knew what the Fins were doing next. Hand off to Ricky, hand off to ricky, sack/incomplete, punt. Every drive.

My biggest beef with the defesnse is what will happen to them in the next few years. Ogunleye-going to be traded. Seau-getting old. Thomas-getting old, possible trade. Taylor-more money, possible trade. The whole secondary-getting older or traded. Who's going to fill the shoes of one of the best defenses in the NFL? With the front office morons wasting draft picks and free agency decisions on hacks like Griese and Thompson, there'll be no picks or money to replace our beloved defense.

Which brings me to my final point. In the 15 years since being a Fins fan, they've never been strong on both sides of the ball at one time. This year and last year their defense was obviously what kept them with a winning record. When Marino was on the team, the offense was the money-maker and the defense sucked. In order to be a superbowl worthy team, the Fins MUST be stong on both sides of the ball, at least for one season. If they would have just spent 2-3 million on a good offensive line and passed on Griese they would have made the playoffs easily.
