The Atlanta Falcons have reached an agreement in principle with the Oakland Raiders to trade cornerback DeAngelo Hall for the Raiders' second-round pick in the 2008 draft, pending the Raiders finalizing a contract with Hall, according to a source close to the Falcons.


Hall is close to agreeing to a contract with the Raiders that will pay him just less than what Asante Samuel agreed to when he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to the source. Samuel signed a six-year deal reportedly worth $57 million, with $20 million guaranteed.


Hall is a former first-rounder taken with the eighth pick in the 2004 draft.

I read this today.  The Raiders also signed Javon Walker.  Looks like they are reloading.

It's not as bad as it was first reported, and it was first reported as a deal including $16 million in guarantees. Not true. The former Denver wide receiver has an $11 million signing bonus and $1 million in base pay for this season.

OK, swell, so he's due $12 million. But let's say he's a bust, and the Raiders decide to move on without him next year, far-fetched as it might be. That means they don't have to pay Walker's $4 million salary or his $5 million roster bonus -- neither of which is guaranteed.

It also means that with an acceleration of $9.165 million, they would be down only $165,000 against the 2009 salary cap. That's the good news. The bad: If they were to cut him, they would have paid $12 million for one year of work.

Yeah, "guaranteed" isn't always what it's cracked up to be. In this case, the Raiders basically have an injury insurance policy.

As for the Hall acquisition... I think he's definitely worth the 2nd rounder, but I'm not crazy about the contract.

The Raiders gave up a second round pick for him.  We could've got him by swapping first round picks with the Falcons.  I guess his contract demands were a turn-off for the Tuna.   *sigh*

If you were Atlanta and you could (a) trade up 3 picks in the first round or (b) get a second rounder outright, which would you prefer?

Unless Deangelo Hall can be the Kobe Bryant of the Raiders, they'll still be a top 5 team in the draft.

You shouldn't overpay for ANYONE for that matter.  Look at Shaun Alexander.  He hasn't been the same since signing that big contract two years ago. 

Name one player that played better once they signed a big contract.

Alexander's problem isn't that he signed a big contract. It's that he's worn out as a running back.

Ever heard of "the curse of 370"? Basically, if a running back has too many runs in a season, he's going to fall apart afterwards. Statistically this massive drop-off in performance happens around 370. Alexander had 370 runs in 2005 and hasn't been himself since. He's also getting older, which isn't exactly conductive to a good season either, although Curtis Martin showed that it's not impossible to pull off.

By the way, "the curse of 370" actually predates Alexander's 370 run season.

When Larry Johnson was run into the ground with an NFL record 416 runs in 2006, there was never any question that he wouldn't be the same again. Sheer stupidity by Herm Edwards.

Ask Ricky what he thought of being run close to 400 times two seasons in a row by Wannestedt? After the first one, he had a career-low 3.5 yards per carry in the next. After that he quit, which (while done at an inexcusable time) probably saved him as a player, allowing him a moderately successful 2005.

With regards to contracts: Only an idiot would sign a running back who has been run into the ground to a huge contract.

Thas because he is hexed by the MADDEN curse  ;D ;D ;D
