Title: What game show would you be on?
Post by: bsfins on April 09, 2008, 01:11:45 pm
I was sitting in a waiting room yesterday, and a semi interesting discussion broke out (for a waiting room  that is)

If you were to go on a game show,What Game show would you try to go on? (Anytime period, past or present is fine)

For Money - Wheel of Fortune, OK it's not gonna make me retire rich, but it's game where I think I could win quite abit of cash..and I'm not smart enough for joeopardy....

For Fun - What's My line for the early 60's....So I only win $50 if I stump the panel, but I think it would a blast to be on

I'd like to go on Deal or No Deal.  I'm pretty conservative, so I'd be boring, but I'd at least bring home several grand guaranteed.

I'd like to be on Are You Smarter Then a Fifth Grader.
My Old School Picks would be Tic-Tac-Dough and Scrabble.

I think I'f like to be on Don't Forget the Lyrics just cause Wayne Brady is funny, but I think I could rock that show.  Either that or Duel.

The Newlywed Game!  I just can not understand whay this show has not been redone!!

Is Survivor a game show?  I would love to do that but I'm fairly certain I couldn't win.  As far as today's shows I'd go for the Deal or No Deal. It looks to be fairly simple to walk away with some money.

Moment of truth.

I'll tell the truth about everything. I don't care what anyone thinks.

I've tried to get in on the walk-in auditions for wheel of fortune twice in the past, only to have them close off the entrants before I can get in both times. I still watch to see if any new auditions pop up here in SFL. I am convinced that I would win every puzzle until they kicked me off the show, simply because I solve every single puzzle while the contestants are still looking generally confused, and being on camera under pressure doesn't bother me at all. An ex-girlfriend once summed it up pretty well when she noted that I'd spent good chunks of my life as...

A) A spelling bee champ who can go forward or backward (just reading it off the LED screen inside my forehead)
B) A writer of short form media who doesn't forget titles or lyrics of any kind...
C) An overly anal copy editor, and
D) A cryptographer who specialized in single-usage decryption.

...So I was pretty much built to dominate the Wheel. ;D

I was always a Price is Right fan, but Drew Carey is really turning me off.

I would like to go on Joes Vs. Pros...Maybe they'll let me box Floyd Mayweather and even though he will beat my ass all I want is to give him one good dirty shot to the nuts.

My wife wants me to audition for Big Brother.  If you thought Evil Dick was tough to deal with in situations where people are backstabbing and lying, you should see me.  I don't deal with BS and call people on it.  Some reason she thinks I would do well on that show.  I think I would be the first one gone.

I'd tear it up in Jeopardy, so that's my game show.  And yes, I have mastered the technique of buzzing in.

Assuming your Deal or No Deal is the same as ours, I would love to go on it and just start picking boxes from left to right.

Our contestants seems to think there is an element of skill in it. here's a hint, THE NUMBER ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX DOES NOT RELATE IN ANYWAY TO THE NUMBER INSIDE!!!!

I saw a classic where the guy had 3 boxes left...he said "Now I'm in trouble" as I agreed with him and waited to hear him say something about how he was in a statistically poor position, he, in all seriousness said "That one is my birthday, that's me Dad's and that one is my house number" WHAT?!?! It doesn't matter!!!!

So, I'd go from left to right and wait for the statistically strong position.

One of the best examples of contestants JUST NOT GETTING IT is (was) Let's Make a Deal. The basic premise (of interest here) was that the contestant had to pick between 3 doors, with just one of them revealing a "fabulous" prize. After choosing one, the host would reveal which of the two remaining doors did NOT contain the prize and then give the contestant the option to switch.

While it (apparently) defies logic for some, you should ALWAYS switch as it doubles your chance of getting the prize.

EDIT: Oh, and I'd probably have to go with "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire". If nothing else, I would make better use of my lifelines than 90% of the contestants I've seen ;)

Here we go again.  I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me how this is possible. ::)

Here we go again.  I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me how this is possible. ::)

Sure thing.

The odds of you picking the right door initially is 1/3, right? Well, the odds of the prize being in one of the other two doors is 2/3, right? We *KNOW* that (at least) one of those two doors has NO prize, so having the host reveal that doesn't add any information - he can ALWAYS show you a door with no prize, regardless of whether the prize is behind one of his or the one you picked initially. Switching will thus increase your chance from 1/3 to 2/3.

Still don't see it? OK, let's play with cards instead. You need to pick the ace of spades in a standard 52 card deck. You pick 1 card. I, the "host", have the remaining 51 cards. We *KNOW* that (at least) 50 of them are NOT the ace of spades and I now show you 50 such cards and give you the choice of switching.

Still think you shouldn't switch? Still think that because there are two cards you haven't seen (the one you picked initially and the one I haven't showed you yet), the chance is 50/50 as to which one is the ace of spades?

HINT: You keep your card and you still have only a 1 in 52 chance of being right. Switch and you have a 51 in 52 chance of being right. Try it a few times with some actual cards if you don't believe it.

If you STILL don't believe it, you can try the classic The Price is Right scheme online here:

NY Times The Price is Right flash game (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/08/science/08monty.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&oref=slogin)

Try it a bunch of times while switching and a bunch of times while NOT switching.
