Henne struggles in final day of rookie minicamp

DAVIE - Dolphins rookie quarterback Chad Henne seemed to be working on mental overload as he wrapped up the final practice of the three-day rookie minicamp on Sunday.

He admitted that he didn't have a sharp practice, and at one point was told to run a lap after blowing an assignment.

"I forgot the snap count,'' said Henne, who was picked No. 57 in the second round last week. "I went on one instead of our second sound. I deserved it.''

Henne said the last time he had received a similar punishment was back in high school for, "cussing.''

Henne was overthrowing most of his receivers Sunday, but some of that had to do with learning 150 pages of the playbook in four days and then trying to assimilate it on the field with rookie receivers he's never thrown to before.

"I was kind of inconsistent with my throws, missed some assignments, but other than I felt pretty good, just getting my feet wet,'' Henne said. "It's tough as a quarterback you have to know what everybody is doing, know your checks, where your progressions are, your footwork. Once I get back here again I'll feel more comfortable and do better.''

Actually, Valdosta State left-handed quarterback Willie Copeland, an unsigned free agent, was on target more than Henne for the first time in the four practices.

"It's the third day and we threw a lot at him,'' Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said. "We wanted to see exactly how much sticks. He might've struggled a little bit but I thought he threw the ball pretty well at times.''

Henne's teammate, first overall pick Jake Long, literally stood out this weekend, as the 6-7, 315-pounder dwarfed his teammates in the huddle, and despite the no-contact edict, was regularly laying out defensive linemen on running plays.

Second-round pick, defensive end Phillip Merling seems to be favoring his surgically repaired groin, however, he said afterward that he walks with a limp naturally.

Hawaii receiver Davone Bess seemed to slow down Sunday, but he still displayed the best hands of the young receivers. However, former Purdue wideout Selwyn Lymon offered Henne and Copeland a large and inviting target at 6-3, 216 pounds.

Sparano made it clear that the Dolphins are looking for a quick, slot receiver, a position that Bess played in Hawaii, and a spot Georgia Southern diminutive receiver Jayson Foster might latch on to.

Of the two six-round running backs, Jalen Parmele stood out with his size, power and burst. GM Jeff Ireland practically gave him the No. 3 job behind Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams in his post-draft wrap-up last week.

Of the 15 unsigned free agents that came to camp on Friday, only Carson-Newman defensive tackle Anthony Toribio was signed – so far. Sparano said he, vice president Bill Parcells and Ireland would review the tapes this week, and possibly add a few more.

"Parcells actually talked to me,'' said Toribio, who grew up in Opa-locka and attended Miami Central. "I was like, 'Man, the Big Tuna told me what really got me on this team was my hustle and my conditioning. That's a pretty big compliment coming from the big guy.''

At 6-foot-1, 305-pounds, Toribio, 23, played in a 4-3 scheme at Carson-Newman where he had 25 tackles, including 5.5 sacks his senior season.

Sparano still hasn't decided on whether he would run a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme, however, Parcells has always gravitated to the 3-4, featuring mammoth nose tackles.

Much of Sunday's practice was dedicated to special teams and punt returns. Special teams coach John Bonamego, who could be heard all over the field because he was miked, had Bess, cornerback Will Billingsley, cornerback Tim Mixon, receiver Justin Wynn and Parmele returning punts.

On Saturday, Sparano said the perceived flap between the Dolphins and star defensive end Jason Taylor was, "overblown,'' and that as long as he and Taylor continue to communicate everything is fine. Taylor should be off 'Dancing with the Stars,' in time to show up for the next organized team activity on May 21.

OMG ... Henne was not sharp and was out performed by Willie Copeland.  We're doomed!!!!  ;) ;D

Damnit!!!!!   I knew Bill Parcells wasn't the right man for this job!!!  He just drafted ANOTHER bust for a QB!!!!  He needs to be fired!!!!!!!!

Wow that didn't take long.  I didn't think Dolphin fans would be calling for Bill's head until  after they lost the first pre-season game.  But then again why wait, might as well become disgruntled at mini camp and beat the season rush. 

You need to replace "Dolphin fans" with "Tommy" then you have it correct!
