Okay - I have dealt with ticks before on a small scale.  In January I bought a house in the woods.  Three times I have come home from work to a freaking out Mrs. Maine that she pulled ticks off her, Abby and our beagle.

For those of you that have dealt with ticks for a long time - what works best?  Is there something I can treat the out lying area of my yard with to reduce the number of ticks?  Do you have a preference of bug off tpe stuff you use on yourself?

Ticks ick me out, man.

Frontline is great ... oh wait, you're not a dog.  My parents use the yard guard for mosquitos but they are very careful to keep the kids and dogs away from it for a day or two.  Ticks - ick!  Do put Frontline on your pup and consider getting him/her vaccinated against Lyme disease if you haven't already.

It was reccommended to me from a friend,who used to use 7 dust...This stuff you attach it to your garden hose....and spray your whole lawn..with in minutes,if it's got legs,and in your yard it's dead for a couple of months.....

The bottle says it kills 180+ insects dead for 2 months.....

Wait a couple of hours for your lawn to dry before you,let pets and little kids on it.....

^^Numb question -- cut your grass first and then treat?  Does the effect wear off each  time you cut your lawn or does it seep into the ground?

It seeps into the ground...if you apply it properly...

Cut the grass the night before,would be my advise.....
The guy at lowes talked about wait till the dew on the grass dries,then spray this stuff....(it comes in a bottle that attaches to your hose) then let it dry....I think the Bottle treats like 10,000 square feet or something like that.....

Didn't you mention a creek near your property? I'd be careful in using it near the creek,you might have the EPA,knocking on your door....

It's actually a river that we have a right of way to...and you have to walk a little bit to get to it.

Have you seen 'I am Legend?"  I feel like rigging my yard with all kind of bombs.  That'll take care of those bastards.

I just THINK tick and I get itchy...

By the way...I think I paid like $11-$15 for the stuff last year...I just wanted to make sure I made that point,it's not expensive....

I had this problem with my dogs when I was married to Ivy.  My advice would be use that stuff that Lil B recommended but yes, cut the grass first. 

Take your dog to the groomers for a dip in a special anti-tick, solution, and use frontline.  Also take it to the vet to get vaccinated against Lyme Disease. 

Keep a close eye on Abby whenever she goes outside from now on.  Check her over each time she's done playing outside.

Do NOT dip your dog!!! 

Frontline is all you need.  Your poor dog does not need one pesticide on top of the other.  They also have way more chance of having a reaction to a dip.  The only problem I have seen with Frontline in my 15 years of being a vet was a little itching at the application site that went away in a day or two.  Frontline will kill even attached ticks.

Did I mention do NOT dip your dog?  Don't dip cats, either, unless you want them to die.

modified to add: No, I don't own stock in Frontline, but I do use it on my dog.

Do you ever consider the fact that some people on here will reply to something without reading what's in the rest of the thread? 

I don't know your situation,but the old folks here in Tennessee swear that if you have some guineas in your yard that they will eat all of the ticks.They are grey or white birds that walk instead of fly,and they are not the smartest species in the world but they will get rid of ticks.And just seeing them wandering around out there is kinda peaceful.

It's funny...the only time in my life I ever had to deal with ticks...was when I lived in Maine. The little blodduckers actually drop from the trees on you as you pass below. Not sure how much help a lawn treatment will be, unless the tick misses the landing zone (your head).

I bought some over the counter stuff to get rid of them back then...no idea what it's called.
