Interesting.  ...and it makes sense.  North Florida is practically a different state already.

Exactly what would this accomplish?  ???

It won't happen. Around a decade ago California voted on the same thing. The northern counties voted that they wanted to split, but nothing came out of it.

  Nothing.

I heard about this and thought that it was a joke. I'm not sure what it would accomplish, but I like the idea. I'm afraid of Northern Florida.

Oh, Lord.  Maine has been trying to do this forever.  Northern Maine wanted out and to become their own state.  Then they wanted to become part of Canada.  Every state that is large geographically always has a percentage of the population wearing the grass is greener glasses.

I think St. Louis and the surrounding St. Louis county should get the heck out of Missouri.  People think we have cows wandering our streets.

BTW Dave- you might wanna make sure your automatic spell check is working.

Its not just the large states, when I was living in RI, there was a group wanting to split the state in two.

I think individual counties should be able to negotiate with other neighboring counties to form new states. I'd like to see an annual "unveiling of the USA flag," where we eagerly wait to see how many stars will be on there.


I think I could still sing most of the words to most of the songs on Hemispheres...though since I just got home from work, the Rush lyric I'm currently appreciating is "the fragrance of afghanistan rewards a long day's toil..."

These are wasted hours, wasted tax payer money, democrats have to be involved.

I think that it could help things.  The needs of N. and S. Florida are very different, as is the mindset, and the money.  N. Florida is like a different country than S. Florida...and most certainly a different state.

The concept is that because of the growth and population boom, that a govt. way up in Tallahassee is now unable to care for the needs of its citizens down South.  ...that could better be done with local government.

And to those who are saying "democrats must be involved":
1) screw you, does everything have to be a partisan issue to you?
and
2) Isn't small, local government a cornerstone of conservative politics?

Other states have the same problem. In California the heavily populated south and central is completely out of touch with the north. It is almost like two completely different worlds. I do not forsee any state splitting in the near future.

If there is a state that needs to be split, it's California. 

This topic is interesting. As soon as you drive past Orlando, driving South on the Florida's Turnpike, you feel like you are traveling into another state.

It might happen 30-50 years from now.

Nah........Just cut the Bottom half off and Make Mexico bigger.  :P

Speaking of giving parts of states away, why not just have south florida become a part of cuba..... oh wait it already is....

Yep. It is what it is. That's why Miami Dolphin fans have all moved North I suppose. It happened way before I got here thats for sure.

What state doesn't have this though? Just about every state in the Union looks like two different places if you travel it enough. Hell Virginia almost looks like three different parts of the country with the coast looking and feeling completely diferent from Northern VA/DC and both completely different from Western VA and the mountains.

South Florida doesn't even look the same as it did 30 years ago.  Central Florida is now going through change as more people head north.  North Florida, as will northern California, will catch up or get worse ... which ever perspective you take.

This same conversation has been going on about Washington for as long as I can remember.  Residents of Eastern Washington, which is fairly rural, are tired of building stadiums and bridges for Western Washington. 

The residents of Western Washington (Seattle, Tacoma, Everett) are fairly snobbish in regards to the "stupid ignorant farmers" over there.  I've actually heard Westerners claim that Easterners couldn't survive without us as EVERYTHING they have comes through our port.  Guess they haven't heard of I-90 and the railroad.

That's interesting because I've never been to the Pacific North West.  But I guess the it would make sense that the part of the state that borders Idaho would be much more Rural. I can definitely see all the states having this problem to one degree or another.  Even where I grew up in NYC is MUCH different then Upstate New York. 2 different Worlds.
