Crowder: no clear leader on offense

With or without Jason Taylor in the lineup, linebacker Channing Crowder expects the Dolphins to have no shortage of leaders on defense.

The effusive Joey Porter, the even-keeled Vonnie Holliday or Parcells’ favorite Jason Ferguson are leading candidates.

The trio has a combined 29 years of NFL experience.

The high-energy Crowder believes he might be ready to mature into a leader during his fourth season and help guide the Dolphins “D” back to respectability.

“I did it in college or high school so it’s no problem,” he said.

But the Dolphins offense doesn’t seem to have nearly as many choices.

“There’s not a lot of older guys, so I don’t know who the leader is,” Crowder, a fourth-year pro, said. “Probably the quarterback - or Ronnie (Brown). Everybody looks up to Ronnie.”

But the Dolphins might not pinpoint a QB until the season-opener, if then, while the mild-mannered Brown is eight months into re-habing an ACL tear.

Never at a loss for words, Crowder said if a leader emerges, he’ll have to do it on the field, not in the locker room.

“You can be the best speaker or the best guy in the world, the best churchgoing individual ever, if you suck nobody is going to respect you and you’re not going to be a leader,” Crowder said. “It’s going to be on the field, and after that it’s how you deal with yourself off the field, how you deal with yourself media wise and everything.

“The best player is going to be the leader because everyone is going to respect his on-the-field play.”

Heading toward the team’s mandatory mini-camp this weekend, Crowder said no one has really established himself as the leader of the Dolphins football team.

One reason is that Jason Taylor is in limbo.

“JT would be the leader. Right now there’s no real leader,” Crowder said. “No one gets up every day and talks or breaks it down. There’s really just a lot of young, athletic guys making plays. There’s some older guys, the Ferguson, Hollidays and Joey Porters who are out here talking and all that stuff.

“It’s just a cumulative effort.”
