Who else belongs on Dolphin Honor Roll?

By Tim Graham | Tuesday, June 17, 2008, 09:58 AM

Whenever a player is honored for lifetime achievement, there’s an opportunity to debate the merits of others.

The Dolphins on Monday announced Killer B’s Bob Baumhower and Doug Betters would be the next added to the Dolphin Honor Roll. They will be the 18th and 19th names inducted into the ring below the upper deck in Dolphin Stadium.

Who belongs up there but isn’t yet?

We know players like LB Zach Thomas (seven Pro Bowls) and DE Jason Taylor (six) will be added once they retire. Until they do, four of the top five Dolphin defenders in terms of Pro Bowls aren’t on the Honor Roll.

S Jake Scott and LB John Offerdahl each played in five Pro Bowls, as did Baumhower.

DE Bill Stanfill played in four Pro Bowls and one AFL all-star game. He was the team’s all-time leader in sacks until 2003. G Ed Newman played in four straight Pro Bowls.

RB Mercury Morris might deserve to be on the Honor Roll based on achievement, but character is a consideration by the selection committee.

Reggie Roby is considered one of the NFL’s best punters. K Garo Yepremian was one of only three Dolphins on the NFL’s all decade team of the 1970s.

Maybe a long-time, respected assistant coach such as Bill Arnsparger or John Sandusky should be included.

Those are just a few ideas. I’m sure you have other suggestions, so let’s have them.

Here is the list of players already on the Dolphin Honor …

1990: Joe Robbie, Larry Csonka, Bob Griese, Jim Langer, Paul Warfield
1991: Nick Buoniconti
1992: 1972 undefeated team
1993: Larry Little
1994: Dwight Stephenson
1995: Bob Kuechenberg
1996: Don Shula
1999: Nat Moore
2000: Dan Marino
2003: Mark Clayton, Mark Duper
2006: Dick Anderson, Richmond Webb
2008: Bob Baumhower, Doug Betters

Offerdahl?

I think that Taylor and Thomas are givens, once they are retired.

Offerdahl?

I think that Taylor and Thomas are givens, once they are retired.

If he hadn't been getting injured constantly his last four or five seasons, it wouldn't even be a question putting Offerdahl's name up there.

It's a shame that Jake Scott won't be up there or in the Hall Of Fame because of his falling out with Don Shula.

The only guy that I see from the 80's that has an outside shot of making it is A.J. Duhe. After that, the pickings are slim because there isn't one player that really stood out for the Dolphins in the 90's. Tim Bowens will be in the Ring of Fame but not soon.

I think Offedahl deserves it for sure.  I think TimBo may get a nod if they're running out of people but I don't see much greatness from the 80's or 90's because it seems that Marino overshadowed everyone else on the team.  Is Jim Jensen up there yet?

I wish they'd go back to only one player at a time.

I think Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain could be in the convo, as well as O.J. McDuffie.

John Offerdahl was a tough guy who played at a persistent pro bowl level and played through lots of pain and injuries. Think of Zach Thomas in a 1980's uniform....the same type of player. A very bright man, always a solid citizen, lots of community service and charitable work, and a hell of a linebacker who was beloved by the fans. He should be first in line for the 2009 Ring of Honor.

I have a #56 personalized jersey to honor Offerdahl. Injuries cut short a very good career.

I guess you could make a case for Keith Sims, too, right?

I have to admit Jvides answer of OJ Mcduffie intrigues me,and I think he should be strongly considered...He's still a Dolphins fan, even though the split wasn't exactly Kosher...

I think O.J. McDuffie is definately in the conversation.
