Sparano a master of detail

By Edgar Thompson | Monday, June 23, 2008, 08:02 AM

Tony Sparano realizes he can’t waste any time.

Every second is valuable if he’s going to turn around the Dolphins.

So Sparano wants to know what he’s doing every day during the upcoming season, including when he can go for his daily 40-minute jog or grab a few Z’s.

“I know what I’m doing Aug. 2 right now,” Sparano said last week. “That’s important to me. My coaches know right now when we show up July 26, what we’re doing that first day of training camp. That’s important.

“I have a pretty good idea of when I can sleep.”

Sitting at his desk, Sparano had several well-edited pages spread out in front of him as he reviewed and revised his schedule once again.

“It’s the third time I’ve called (media relations director) Harvey (Greene) down and gone over my schedule for in season,” Sparano said. “He’s tired of hearing it from me. The details are important for me.

“I know there’s this much time allotted I have to get the most of out of this time. So how do I get the most of out this time? What’s the most efficient way to go about it?”

Sparano expects the same thing from his players.

During mini-camp, LB Joey Porter, a 10th-year pro and three-time Pro Bowl pick, spent a good bit of time off to the side working on basic techniques with defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni.

“Putting his right hand here is important,” Sparano said. “Some people say what the hell does that have to do with anything? Just let the guy play.

“That’s not true to the point where Joey Porter is sitting in that chair a week ago telling me, ‘Coach I gotta get that technique. It’s important when I get it, I feel like I accomplished something when I know I got it right.’

“These guys are starting to understand you can win and lose predicated on the details, the little things.”

Sparano is heading back home to Connecticut in a day or two to enjoy a couple of weeks of family time.

But unlike many of us, Sparano won’t be easing back into the routine once he returns from his first significant break since his Jan. 16 hiring.

Expect Sparano to know exactly what he’ll be doing the minute he’s back in the office.
