Title: Saturday Night Live's first episode
Post by: run_to_win on June 29, 2008, 04:40:11 am
In honor of George Carlin, NBC showed Saturday Night Live's first episode tonight.  Did anyone else watch it?

Not very funny ... at all.  If not for Andy Kaufman lip-synching to the theme from Mighty Mouse, and one Weekend Update line from Chevy Chase ("...each stamp is ten cents, 25 if you want to lick it") then I'm not sure I would have laughed at all.

 ???

I watched it.  ...and laughed at those two moments, as well.

Carlin's stand-up didn't do much for me.  I don't care for his style all that much.

Didn't watch but I remember Andy Kaufman's "mighty mouse" bit,too funny. My favorite George Carlin line was "before they give a guy a lethal injection in this country.....they swab his arm with alcohol".Dude was funny, and he made you think.

One thing that I did like about the first SNL episode was how short the skits were.  They were really brief, so by the time you thought they weren't (or were) funny, they were over.  For the few good skits, it was over before it was spoiled, and for the bad ones, it was over fast.

I think one thing that should be taken into consideration is the fact that it was "the first" SNL episode, and like a lot of shows, it was a bit rough coming out of the gates before getting polished into the iconic sketch comedy show that it became.

I loved Carlin's stand-up, and he was one of three comics that I used to buy their 8-tracks and cassettes when I was a kid. The other two were Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor.

I saw it, I think it was times are different...Most,if not everthing Carlin said ,you heard him say 20 times now....
