Who do you think is the best movie villain of all time?

Top of my head:

John Doe, Kevin Spacey in Seven.

I know there are more but that movie disturbed/pissed me off so much that I only saw it once. Great ending.

I think that mine is Hannibal Lecter from Silence of the Lambs.  He was a very likable creepy.



I also think that considering how bad the movie was, that Darth Maul was a pretty bad-ass villain.  ...not a lot of talking, but a lot of ass-kicking and a lot of personality for no dialogue, through only expression and fight choreography.

That was the first that popped in my head too. That movie messed with my head. It's definitely one of my favorites.

I loved Darth Maul, but for being so bad-ass, they got rid of him pretty quickly.

I'd have to give it to Biff from the Back to the Future trilogy.

Buffalo Bill (OR bob...I can't remember his name right this second) from Silence of the Lambs used to give me nightmares.

Honorable Mention:  Paris Hilton.  She's creepy as fuck.

I have to go with Dave here...Hannibal Lecter is the best villain in recent movie memory. Freakishly intelligent cold and calculating psychos scare me much more than the raging angry variety. Spacey in Seven and Bale in American Psycho are both good ones as well.

Side thought...since the three movies I mention are all on my "watched it at least a hundred times" list, I wonder if the quality of the villain in a movie is more important to the greatness of a film than the quality of the hero?

There were some great ones already mentioned.....I enjoyed Jigsaw from the Saw series just based on the sick sadistic shit he would do to people. It takes a whacked out freak to come up with that shit!!!!!

I was going to mention Darth Vader.

The No Country For Old Men guy is a good choice.  That performance was great.

When I saw this thread first thing this morning my first thought wasn't a character,but a Actors that tend to play villains....

I thought about
Ed Harris - (the Rock,history of violence,National treasure 2)
John Malkovich - Con air
Tim Currey- Don't laugh- (Rocky horror picture show ,Annie (rooster),and The butler in Clue)

If I had a to pick a character I'd say Denzel Washington in Training day...even though I'm not real fond of the movie...

I have a hard time thinking of Ed Harris as a villain, mainly because the two movies of his that I've seen the most (Glengarry, Glen Ross and The Abyss), he really didn't play the villain.

I have a little bit of a hard time with Malkovich, though he did play a bitchin Cyrus the Virus in Con Air...because the other two movies I've seen him in a lot (Of Mice and Men and The Man in the Iron Mask) he played the good guy.

As far as Tim Curry goes, he actually played a villain you didn't list there that I damned near considered instead of Hannibal Lecter for this thread...but didn't because I figured everyone would think it was blatant stephen king bias on my part. Tim Curry played the ultimately scary clown, Pennywise, in "It."

I also want to give mention to a villain who has never uttered a word on the screen, but brought horror onto the screen. Jason from Friday the 13 Th series still is a fan favorite among horror fans.

Malkovich was also the bad guy in In the line of fire....I never saw the man in the iron mask...Wasn't he also the killer in jenifer eight,or was that Lance hendrickson...I can't remember off the top of my head....I also think of him in Dangerous liasions...and Mary Shelly,where he played both Jeckyl and Hyde

Ed Harris was also one of John Nashes...bad figments of his imagination...in a beautiful mind...The evil director in the Truman show...

I keep wanting to watch "IT" When I see it on Scifi....

Michael Biehn..Who played the bad ranger dude in the Abyss,and played the bad guy Johnny Ringo in Tombstone...( the only other movie I can think of him in was navy seals where he was a good guy..)

He played one other good guy role that I'll bet you've seen once or twice...or a hundred times. Kyle Reese, the "sent back in time" father of John Connor in the original "Terminator" movie.

Ok this isn't a movie villain, But I think "Dexter" deserves and honorable mention.
