SI.com picks Henne to be starter

By Edgar Thompson | Friday, July 18, 2008, 06:47 PM

Been working on a Dolphins’ Sunday story, but just came across a couple of items on the QBs you might not have seen.

SI.com’s Don Banks picks rookie Chad Henne to win the QB job this season.

A couple of observations:

1. Did Banks see Henne during mini-camp? He shows flashes of arm strength and playmaking, but understandably looks to be a good bit behind Josh McCown and John Beck.

Henne might catch up soon enough, but fans better hope it takes him awhile to outplay McCown, a six-year veteran, and Beck, entering his second year after a grueling off-season. Teams that start 23-year-old rookies not name Dan Marino tend to lose a lot of games.

2. Banks writes “Parcells’ Dolphins will wind up going against his history” and play the youngest QB..

Parcells did lean on veteran QBs late in his coaching career, but not early.

In his first season with the Giants in 1983, Parcells picked 26-year-old Scott Brunner over 29-year-old Phil Simms.

Parcells started 23-year-old Drew Bledsoe as a rookie in 1993 with the Patriots, instead of 29-year-old Scott Zolak.

Parcells did eventually run a QB geriatric ward with 35-year-old Vinny Testarverde starring for the 1998 Jets and lining up under center six seasons later for the 6-10 Cowboys.

Parcells also brought 33-year-old Bledsoe to Dallas the next season, but eventually replaced him with 26-year-old Tony Romo in the sixth game of the 2006 season.

So, it’s coin flip what Parcells’ history with QBs really is.

Nonetheless, Henne opening the season under center would be a pretty big surprise.

By the way, there's a story that just came out on Beck, who is back in Provo. He compares his first season with the Dolphins with his first season at BYU, which finished 11-2 during Beck’s senior season.

Dolfans no doubt hope he experiences the same thing here … only with an even faster timetable.

Henne will not be opening the season under center unless he has a mind blowing training camp.  And with him still unsigned, that probably will not happen.

Don't be surprised if you see him finish the season under center though.

Beck may end up being the starter.  :-\

The same SI that predicted the Dolphins to win the Super Bowl a couple years back? It's almost obvious Henne will not start. Either Beck or McCown will have the full-time job under center.

They should put the phins on the cover again, maybe the bad luck will reverse itself.
