Dolphins working out rookie lineman Pedro Sosa

By Edgar Thompson | Tuesday, July 22, 2008, 10:17 AM

Former Rutgers left tackle Pedro Sosa will be working out for the Dolphins today, looking to catch on with an NFL team after a knee injury scared teams away during the draft.

The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Sosa, who started 38 games for the Scarlet Knights, was a two-time second-team All-Big East pick. But he wasn’t drafted because of a knee injury that prevented him from participating in the scouting combine or in individual workouts.

He injured his left patella tendon during a November practice and re-injured it during East/West Shrine game practices. The injury eventually required surgery.

Sosa, who recorded 62 knockdowns and seven blocks that led to touchdowns last season, worked out on July 8 for several NFL teams, including the Dolphins, to show he was back to full strength.

The Dolphins are taking another look today, and could end up signing Sosa to a deal.

There’s a report out there that the team plans to ink Sosa this afternoon to a three-year contract.

I wondered during the draft if anyone was going to spend a 7th round pick on the guy, just on his potential... Now I hope that Miami does sign him on the cheap.

Good deal...you can never have too much young talent on your O-line. I hope he can stay healthy long enough for his talent to win him a roster spot.

Dolphins workout former Rutgers offensive linemen

Even though training camp opens on Saturday the Dolphins front office hasn't stopped working to improve the roster.

On Tuesday the Dolphins worked out former Rutgers tackle Pedro Sosa, who started 38 games for the Scarlet Knights, and was a two-time second-team All-Big East selection.

The Dolphins, which were the first of six teams to show interest in Sosa, will likely wait for the results of a physical before determining whether or not to sign the versatile lineman.

Sosa, who is 6-foot-4, 300 pounds, entered his senior season projected as an early second-day draft pick, but he tore the patella tendon in his left knee during the season.

He finished out Rutgers' season playing with the injury but re-injured it during practices for the East/West Shrine game. The knee was surgically repaired in January and according to Sosa's agent, Harold Lewis, Sosa's doctors say "the knee is at 100 percent."

The Dolphins have five tackles on the roster. But beyond Vernon Carey, who is projected to start along with rookie Jake Long, there is little NFL experience, which makes depth questionable.

Julius Wilson spent most of his rookie season on the Dolphins practice squad before getting promoted to the 53-man roster for the final month of the 2007 season. The other two tackles, Dan Gore and Daren Heerspink, were signed as undrafted rookie free agents this summer.

He would've probably gone in the 4th or 5th round if not for that knee injury.  This guy's a monster.

I just hope he isn't my next Toledo...

Joe Toledo was a fourth round pick, Sosa is an Undrafted Rookie. Big difference. Anytime an undrafted player even gets close to the starting lineup, it's way beyond what you could reasonably expect.
