Agent says Henne will be in training camp By Edgar Thompson | Tuesday, July 22, 2008, 02:25 PM When players report for Dolphins’ training camp on Friday, rookie quarterback Chad Henne will be among them, agent Justin Schulman said. Henne and defensive end Phillip Merling, the team’s other second-round pick, are unsigned with the first day of training camp five days away. But Schulman, who also represents John Beck, said he expects Henne’s negotiations to be wrapped up by then. The Dolphins selected Henne with he No. 57 pick. With so many questions at each player’s position, Henne and Merling are expected to get a shot to play this season. To give themselves the best chance, both need to be in training camp from Day 1. Many teams are struggling to sign their first- and second-round picks because of a dispute between the NFL Players Association and the NFL Management Council. It’s a complicated issue caused by the league’s recent decision to opt out of the the current collective bargaining agreement. Rookies will be under contract during an uncapped year in 2010, which led the players union to advise agents to hold off on making deals for high draft picks. A ruling on Monday in favor of the NFLPA should help speed up negotiations around the league. No word on whether Merling, the No. 32 pick this past April, will be in training camp. But negotiations should be amicable, given his agent, Jimmy Sexton, also represents Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano. Look what happened to Ronnie Brown and Jason Allen when they took so long to sign deals. Question. Can a player who is unsigned report to training camp if he signs an injury waiver? |
