Holliday displays his versatility

DAVIE — Dolphins coach Tony Sparano has highlighted several times the importance of having versatile football players, and that means everyone, including 32-year-old veterans. Vonnie Holliday, a defensive tackle in his first 10 years in the league, is learning how to play outside linebacker, and even dropped back in pass coverage in drills Monday afternoon.

Parcells isn't the coach, but he's still coaching

Bill Parcells claims he doesn't want to coach the Dolphins, nor does he have much of a hand in picking the roster. But on Monday afternoon, he stood on the sidelines in the bubble and pulled aside cornerback Joey Thomas repeatedly to give him a little 1-on-1 instruction.

Quote of the day

"It'd be nice having a No. 1 quarterback and knowing who that quarterback will be. I would like to know as soon as possible, but hey, if I gotta wait, I gotta wait." - receiver Derek Hagan

Fresh faces

RB Jalen Parmele: A sixth-round pick out of Toledo in April's draft, Parmele is competing with Lex Hilliard and Patrick Cobbs for the third tailback spot. Parmele rushed for 2,600 yards with 22 touchdowns in his last two seasons at Toledo. The Dolphins like his size (5 feet 11, 220 pounds) and speed (4.47 40-yard dash).

Quarterback watch

John Beck didn't throw any interceptions after tossing three Sunday, but he still looks frazzled when facing a pass rush. Josh McCown had an excellent afternoon session and appears to be ahead in the competition. Chad Henne is still learning the offense but is showing off his strong arm.

Injury update

LB Joey Porter (ankle) took the field Monday evening for the first time since camp opened on Saturday. He assumed his position as the first-team left outside linebacker and participated fully.

CB Michael Lehan (ankle) continued to sit out and has not practiced yet.

OG Steve McKinney (knee) participated in the morning practice but sat out of the evening session.

Gaining ground

OG Donald Thomas: He didn't play football in high school and was a walk-on at the University of Connecticut. But Thomas, a sixth-round pick in April's draft, replaced Trey Darilek as the starting right guard in Monday evening's practice.

Losing ground

OLB Rob Ninkovich: He had been getting repetitions with the first team with Joey Porter sidelined because of an ankle injury. But Porter returned to the field for the afternoon's practice, and while Charlie Anderson continued to play with the first team, Ninkovich was relegated to backup.
