Title: Tony Sparano: Dolphins veterans won't rest in exhibition games Post by: DolFan619 on August 05, 2008, 09:19:13 pm http://www.palmbeachpost.com/dolphins/content/sports/epaper/2008/08/05/0805dolphins.html
Tony Sparano: Dolphins veterans won't rest in exhibition games By EDGAR THOMPSON Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Tuesday, August 05, 2008 DAVIE — Dolphins coach Tony Sparano wants to change everything about last year's disastrous season. He'll start Saturday night when Tampa Bay visits Dolphin Stadium for the teams' exhibition opener. Last season, coach Cam Cameron held out a number of key veterans during the exhibition season. Cameron believed it was better for the team to rest linebacker Zach Thomas, defensive end Jason Taylor and defensive tackle Keith Traylor. Sparano, on the other hand, said he plans to use everyone who is healthy enough to play. "We were 1-15 and we're trying to change a culture," Sparano said today. Sparano not only wants to get a look at his players in game situations, he wants to continue to build team unity leading up to the Sept. 7 season opener at home against the New York Jets. "We need to be in a game, be in a game environment," he said. "We need to get as many guys into uniform as we can get in uniform, being in that locker room together, coming out of that tunnel together. (We need to) be on the sideline together, go through whatever we're going to go through in that game together. "We need to see all the reactions that way and get these guys involved as much as we can." Sparano said his experiences with Bill Parcells, who hired Sparano as an assistant in Dallas in 2003, has helped shaped his philosophy regarding the pre-season. "I've been with Bill a long enough time," Sparano said of the new executive vice president for football operations. "I'm not much on saving guys or doing any of those things. "We'll be smart if we have to be smart with some players. (But) our players know they need to play. We need to get better."
