Porter sitting out, Murphy back

By Edgar Thompson | Tuesday, August 19, 2008, 09:47 AM

Linebacker Joey Porter was on the sideline this morning, while his teammates went through individual drills during practice at the team’s indoor bubble.

Porter, who missed the Aug. 9 pre-season opener with a back injury and returned to practice last week, was wearing shoulder pads and had his helmet. But he rode an exercise bike and left the facility.

Linebacker Charlie Anderson joined Porter on the exercise bike and remains out with a hamstring injury. Running back Ronnie Brown also wasn’t wearing pads and had a soft cast on his right hand to protect his sprained thumb.

Everyone else practiced, including rookie guard Shawn Murphy, who injured his left ankle last week. Murphy, the team’s fourth-round pick, didn’t play at Jacksonville and sat out Monday.

Last week, coach Tony Sparano didn’t sound concerned by Porter’s injury, but it’s the second time in a month the Dolphins $20 million investment is nursing a nagging injury.

The team is counting on Porter, 31, to provide playmaking and leadership following a disappointing first season in South Florida. He didn’t have a sack during the team’s first six games and had only 1 1/2 sacks entering the month of December.

Three of his 5 1/2 sacks came in lopsided losses to New England, not exactly the kind of difference-making impact the franchise expected when it inked Porter to a five-year deal in March 2007.

Porter had one tackle this past weekend against the Jags.
