Reading between Sparano's lines (Daniels traded)

Tony Sparano is a straight shooter so I believed him last week when he said John Beck wasn't getting cut and there have been no discussions about dealing Ronnie Brown. This just in, the Fins traded CB Travis Daniels to the Browns for an undisclosed draft pick.

Daniels has been struggling this offseason and often playing behind Nate Jones, Will Billingsley and Joey Thomas (beyond starters Andre' Goodman and Will Allen). Travis was one of Nick's guys and never really played as well as he did in his rookie season of 2005. T.D. was a good guy and a lifelong Dolphins fan who went to South Broward High. We wish him nothing but the best.

Back to my original premise. What kind of value could you get for Ronnie now? And don't you need him in case Ricky goes down or flakes out (which I don't believe he will). Rookie Jalen Parmele isn't ready yet. Tony said Pamele's like "looking for a small ball in tall grass." RB Patrick Cobbs will make the squad because he does everything good if not great.

That doesn't mean they're not seriously shopping Beck. Bill Parcells doesn't like to give away second round picks a year after they're drafted even if he wasn't the one doing the shopping. Although Sparano won't name Chad Pennington his starter over the rookie Chad Henne, I'm not buying it. Pennington will start against the Jets on opening day and Henne will be his backup with veteran Josh McCown the emergency guy. They'll hold onto Beck as long as it takes to get a draft pick. They could be trying for a fourth-rounder, but not even their buddies in Dallas will give them anything but a sixth or a seventh for a kid who hasn't proven squat.

That said, I don't believe him when he says the revised depth charts aren't accurately portraying where he's ranking the players. For instance, he switched Boomer  Grigsby over Reagan Mauia this week and today said there's still plenty of football to be played and no decision has been made. What he really means is clearly Grigsby has beaten out Mauia, but that doesn't mean he doesn't keep an extra tight end instead of Boomer, because he likes his TEs to play the h-back position. So that could mean Anthony Fasano, David Martin, Justin Peelle and Sean Ryan stick. Of the four, clearly Ryan should be on the bubble however he is one of this regime's 'guys.'

Lets not anoint Matt Roth the starting OLB job yet. He's there because of injuries to Charlie Anderson and now Joey Porter. Sparano loves Roth's motor, but this is still in its experimental stage. Roth is too heavy at that spot. He's just holding the position open until Anderson's hammy heals.

Sparano made it clear that AFL alumnus Anthony Armstrong is making it very difficult to ignore him in the fight for one of the last receiver spots behind Ted Ginn Jr., Derek Hagan, Ernest Wilford and yes rookie Davone Bess is a lock - and not for the practice squad - for the slot spot. Sparano said that Armstong caught three bombs in the bubble yesterday!

I belive that David Kircus and  Greg Camarillo are the same person and one will not make it. For now,  I'm going with Camarillo, last year's hero. The guy is, "quarterback friendly,'' according to Tony and did you see him make every catch in sight Saturday? Kircus did fine the week before but he's got a little off-field baggage and that could be the difference.
