The Dolphins made an unexpectedly early move toward trimming down their depth chart at wide receiver Friday, waiving David Kircus one day before the team's third preseason game. Then again, these days, it's becoming clear nothing should be unexpected.

Kircus, who had a solid preseason debut against the Bucs, apparently hasn't done enough to separate himself from the younger crop of receivers -- a theme that has been taking place all the way down the roster.

The reason the move is a surprise, though, isn't simply that Kircus was one of the bigger-named acquisitions of the offseason. Instead, it's the timing. Before cutting Kircus and cornerback Chris Roberson on Friday, the Dolphins already were at 73 players.

Now at 71 players, the team is four players below the roster limit of 75 players - which isn't even mandatory to hit until Tuesday.

The team has clearly taken an approach to refuse delaying the inevitable. When this regime makes a decision, it acts immediately. No reason to see any more practices. No reason to see any more preseason games.

Kircus' departure could open a door for undrafted rookie Anthony Armstrong, who has been a surprise lately in training camp. Because the team is likely to only keep five receivers, it seemed despite Armstrong's talent, Miami wouldn't have room.

Now, with Ted Ginn Jr. and Derek Hagan as the only locks on the team, Ernest Wilford, Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess will likely vie for the third and fourth receiver spots. The team could also choose to cut one of those three to keep Jayson Foster and Armstrong.

Foster and Armstrong are the most likely candidates for the practice squad, since Wilford, Camarillo and Bess would have the least chance of clearing waivers to get picked up on the practice squad.


Wow..... this was completely unexpected.  He had a good game against Tampa, and you'd think they'd give him another look.

Hopefully this team will keep 6 receivers instead of 5.  I'd hate to see guys like Bess or Armstrong get snatched up by another team and then excel. 

Disappointed.  I liked this guy since he was in Denver.  He'll get scooped up by someone.  I think this pretty much guarantees Camarillo a spot.

This one of the rare times I'm going to disagree with Brian...but I thought it was a bad signing...I never thought he was that good in Denver.....

I'm more disappointed in the thought of Earnest Wilford....

I am happy to see the new administration,say we made a mistake,and he's gone...I Wanted Mcown,But Now I think he needs to go now...Possibliy pick up some young veteran that might get cut...I'm not sure who that might be...(NO NOT CULPEPPER >:( )

I totally agree that Wilford was a waste of guaranteed money.

Good, I was afraid we'd wind up keeping him around the way the reporters had been extolling his virtues.

Kircus has been in the league since 2003 and accomplished pretty much nothing (15 catches for 300 yards and 1 touchdown, 2 games started).

He just doesn't seem to match a need with his particular skill set - and that skill set isn't exactly hot.

One worrisome aspect is the number of short receivers we have left. I've always thought teams way overvalued height in a receiver, but still... Ginn, Bess, Armstrong and Foster are all less than 6 feet. Hagan and Camarillo are 6'2" and 6'1".

We need at least one big guy to create mismatches and go for jump balls. Right now, all we have is Wilford. He's tall, 6'4", but hasn't been playing well.

Mark my words, though... with the short receivers Miami has, no way does Wilford get cut.

I agree completely, fyo...I love me some big WRs, and wish we had one or two.

Depending on Miami's record, maybe Michael Crabtree in next year's draft. 6'3", 210 lbs, and suction cups on his fingertips.

  Will have nothing to do with the other Wr.  Miami handed him 6 million up front.  They are going to give him every chance to earn it.

He was guaranteed a spot when Miami signed him.

I think maybe Parcells is trying to do right by the players; if he knows they aren't going to make the next cut, and he can't get anything for them, cut them ASAP so they have that much more time to work out for another team.

I liked Kircus,   Hagan should have been cut  ::) ::)

Obviously you haven't paid any attention to the pre-season and are basing your remarks on past seasons perfromances. Kircus did ZERO during pre season or camp. Hagan has out played everyone, thats why he is starting ahead of Wilford.

  I could never understand some of the reporters obsession with Kircus.  The guy was never really that good.

DAVIE - The Dolphins whittled their roster to 71 by releasing receiver David Kircus and cornerback Chris Roberson Friday.

Kircus, 28, who had been out of football since 2006 while dealing with off-field issues, displayed excellent hands in training camp, an ability to stretch the field and had three catches for 39 yards in the first exhibition game against the Bucs. He was vying for one of the few remaining receiver slots behind Ted Ginn Jr., Derek Hagan, Ernest Wilford and surprising rookie Davone Bess.

Kircus' departure was probably hastened by the emergence of former AFL receiver Anthony Armstrong, who has impressed coaches with his speed, hands and deep-threat skills. Also, receiver Greg Camarillo, last year's hero in the overtime victory over the Ravens, is constantly called, "quarterback friendly,'' by coach Tony Sparano, and is a solid special teams player.

Perhaps, Kircus' most memorable moment in a Dolphins uniform came last week in practice when he got pummeled by cornerback Will Allen after the two had gone out on a sideline pattern. About 30 other players joined in the fray. There didn't seem to be any hard feelings afterwards.

Roberson, 25, who was signed on July 30, was most likely deemed expendable because of the progress made by young corners' Joey Thomas and rookie Will Billingsley. Also, cornerback Michael Lehan is on the mend from a sprained ankle, and Nate Jones was being used as the nickel cornerback behind starters Will Allen and Andre' Goodman.

Roberson hadn't played since his rookie season with the Jaguars in 2006 because of a shoulder injury.

The Dolphins continued to whittle down their roster Friday, parting ways with free agent receiver David Kircus and cornerback Chris Roberson.

The decision to cut Kircus, 28, leaves Davone Bess, Jayson Foster, Anthony Armstrong, Greg Camarillo and Ernest Wilford to compete for three or four spots behind Ted Ginn and Derek Hagan.

Kircus, a three-year NFL veteran, was signed Feb. 28 to provide the team with another deep threat in the passing game. He hasn’t played an NFL regular season since 2006 with Denver.

Roberson, 25, was brought into camp July 30 to compete for a cornerback job. Now Will Billingsley, Nate Jones and Joey Thomas are battling for the final spots behind Will Allen, Andre Goodman, Michael Lehan and possibly Chris Crocker.

The Dolphins now have 71 players in camp. Cut-down day to the 53-man roster is Aug. 30.

But you still wanted to keep Kircus? Wow, you must be a better talent evaluator than Parcells and his crew.
There is change for the sake of change, and then there is good change. Keeping Kircus, despite his crappy play, would've been change for the sake of change. Getting a new WR coach who has been able to bring out the potential in Hagan is good change.

  You dislike Hagan?  Really?  Gee, I couldn't tell.


  You must of watched those games with your eyes closed.


  Much like the games on TV, your eyes were probably shut as well.


  "Quick changes" and "quick fixes" are what got the Dolphins into this mess in the first place.  It seems that finally this team has competent regime that has a plan, and it's plan that probably has another year to go before the team gets competitive.

Lets hope so   :D

After last night's game, I'd say that plan is coming along ahead of schedule.  The team will be competitive this year, make the playoffs next year, and be in the thick of the title hunt in 2010.
