Dolphins' Ginn begins to turn the corner

By ARMANDO SALGUERO
Miami Herald

Those were cheers Ted Ginn Jr. heard as he turned into something of an aqua blur on his way to a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown Saturday night.

It must have been a strange moment for Miami's most unloved player of 2007.

The last time Dolphins fans reacted this lustily to anything Ginn did was on draft day, when the announcement of his selection was greeted with groans, and then loud angry boos.

It wasn't Ginn's fault. His name simply wasn't Brady Quinn.

Then, in the span of one Cam Cameron dissertation, Ginn became a punch line that lasted an entire season. Cameron actually told people the Dolphins had just spent a first-round pick, the ninth overall in a draft, on Ginn and his family.

And, oh, by the way, Cameron suggested, the kid he just drafted wasn't necessarily a special player, but rather, just a special teams player for the time being. Ginn had no chance from the start.

But now he is turning that ugly start around as undeniably as he turned Saturday's punt return from a disaster to an amazing moment.

The Dolphins' fastest player, the guy who makes the rumored acquisition of Olympian Usain Bolt truly ridiculous, was on his way to a terrible play. Ginn retreated and gave away field position -- until he downshifted and that inner turbocharger kicked in.

Quickly, Ginn found the edge of Miami's return wedge, and suddenly everyone else seemed to be running in place as he zipped past. One blink later, Ginn was in the end zone, and the Dolphin Stadium crowd was approving gleefully.

GAME-CHANGING

Think of that scene as a promise of more game-changing plays to come.

Ginn is more than capable of making something out of nothing. That is what he did as a returner on a couple of occasions last season.

Playing with perhaps one of the worst special teams units ever assembled, he still delivered an 87-yard return for a touchdown against Philadelphia. Another touchdown return against Buffalo was erased by a penalty.

And he showed again Saturday that these moments of brilliance don't have to be fleeting. But if you want something to feel impressed about, look at what Ginn is now doing as a receiver.

It isn't unfair to expect Ginn to be something more than a dangerous returner because Devin Hester, a great return guy, was drafted 46 picks later in a previous draft.

So as the ninth pick in a draft, Ginn is expected to be a great wide receiver as well as a fine returner. In fact, if the Dolphins had to pick, they would prefer Ginn be a great receiver first.

Ginn isn't nearly there yet as a receiver. He has been giving ground as he did on that punt return, learning how to run routes and trying to maintain his speed during his route, as well as after he catches the football.

Ginn has been a work in progress as a receiver. But the progress is undeniable.

IMMUNE TO DROPS

That outbreak of dropped passes the receivers had early in training camp never affected Ginn. He always caught the ball cleanly.

Now he is doing something we haven't seen. He is running his patterns across the field, as well as down the sideline. He is wandering into dangerous territory, where linebackers roam, as well as trying to streak past corners on the outside.

And he is producing.

The numbers don't seem overly impressive at first glance. He caught three passes for 29 yards Saturday and has eight catches for 97 yards this preseason. But understand that his total playing time in three exhibition games adds up to about four quarters.

Those numbers lead the Dolphins this preseason, and that, too, is notable. Last season, Ginn was nowhere near the top of Miami's receiving category. He caught fewer passes than running back Ronnie Brown, who missed half the season because of a knee injury.

But Ginn is making himself available to quarterbacks this preseason. He is seemingly forcing them to throw to him.

He hasn't arrived yet as a receiver, and he must meet his potential to live up to his draft pedigree. But he is turning the corner

So it might not be long before the family jokes will forever be drowned out by cheers.

Please stop with personal attacks. This is the second warning I've given you this morning alone.

That's going a little too far, but he did ruin my 2007 football season.

Back on subject : Ginn still has some work to do, but he is showing massive improvement.  We cannot blame him because he was picked instead of another player.  His play on the field should give us our opinon of him.

He really is.  I think getting Chad Pennington has not only helped Ginn in his development as a receiver, but Derek Hagan as well.  It's uncanny too see how much their play has gone up since Pennington arrived.

Personally, I would have went with "look at your mom's stats from last night".
