Title: Bad call by ref's on the monday night game.
Post by: simeon on September 16, 2008, 09:49:15 am
A young receiver(Jackson) for Philadelphia caught a long pass and was heading into the endzone, at the one yard line he flipped the ball in back of him in a celebration of TD, the refs call a Td. Wait here comes a flag, after another so called whistle blow. Sure enough the kid did let the ball go at the one yard line where Dallas eventually recovered, but wait a whistle is blown so Philadelphia gets the ball back on the one yard line. The Morons announcing this game kept saying the Eagles get the ball back because it was a backwards pass, what the heck is a backwards pass to begin with. Doesn't any ball leaving your hand in a backwards motion from the position you are in on the field considered a lateral ? And isn't a lateral a live ball ?
I know this play was screwed up.

So the ball rolled out of bounds ? I was listening but not watching the announcers kept saying backwards pass, I thought that was kind of a dumb thing to be saying.

If its ruled a TD on the field, and the whistle blew to end the play, then there can't be a continuation of play after the whistle and, thus, no one recovered the fumble and the ball was given to the fumbling team at the last know point of possession (the 1 yard line)

Brian, they changed the "play stops at the whistle" rule before last season. Now, it's only when the ruling on the field is a forward pass that the play stops immediately.

I'm too lazy to find the link now (I posted it yesterday in the Chargers thread), but Peter King covered it in his MMQ article yesterday.

Wasn't the play ruled an incomplete forward pass, and thus the whistle was blown.

It was a bad call, because the ref saw the wrong thing...but he did the correct thing in not overturning it.  It's the way the rule is written.  Refs are open to human error just like anyone else.  It wasn't some blatant lack of competence that led to it...he just saw it the wrong way and had to make a call.

Ed Hochuli 's apology:

He manned up  but I think in some businesses when you fuck up this bad you need to leave. He shouldn't be making judgement calls like this anymore. They need to be held accountable and the Charger fans deserve his resignation. Small consolation for a conference championship.

Chargers still had two chances win the game.  Plus when you give up the number of points they did in that game, its kinda hard for me to accept he cost them the game.

Its not the first time a ref missed a call like this & will not be the last.

To me this is no different then the horrible pass interference call that happened Monday night when the Wr grabbed the DB uniform & pulled him in, then the ref called defensive PI.  Gave the Eagles the ball on the 1 instead of moving them backwards.
