Title: Show Review: Weeds (Showtime)
Post by: Dave Gray on October 10, 2008, 03:03:00 pm
I started watching Weeds, because I really like a lot of these cable series (Sopranos, Dexter, Six Feet Under, Rome, Deadwood, etc)  Even if I don't always stick with the shows, I find them very entertaining and well made.

Anyway, Weeds is about a housewife in a rich California neighborhood.  Her husband dies, and she starts selling marijuana as an act of desperation to support her posh lifestyle.  It explores her trying to balance raising a family as a single mom with exploring a drug underworld filled with thugs.

The tone of the show is pretty light and silly sometimes, and doesn't take itself too seriously.  I'd call it a Dramady.

I liked the show, but found the first season kinda disturbing, because I'm used to finding one character to really like.  ....and in this show, it's kinda hard.  Everyone is pretty screwed up, and even the main woman does some sketchy stuff (on top of selling weed).  Once I got past that, though, I found the show very enjoyable.  I'm partway through the 3rd season now.

One cool thing about the show is the theme song.  It's a song from the 50s, I think, called "Little Boxes".  In the 2nd season, they keep the same song, but each week, it's covered by a different band or artist, with their own unique sound.   ...an interesting way of doing it.

Anyone else seen this show?

Been watching it since the beginning. I hate the theme song and am so glad they got rid of it for season 3. I think part of the draw for me is the fact that so many characters are screwed up.

I caught the last episode with the big fire. I dont know if that was the series final, but I enjoyed it. I might buy the seasons to see it all.

That was the end of season three. They have already finished airing season 4.

This show has what I like to call "24 syndrome."  Let me explain what I mean by that.

I found the first season of 24 pretty captivating... until every single perilous situation was succeeded by a new and more perilous situation.  Right when Jack Bauer's daughter jumped out of the exploding car and his wife "caught amnesia" from seeing it, I bailed out of the show.  My suspension of disbelief can only take so much of a beating before it breaks.

Likewise, I expected Weeds to be over at the end of the second season.  There were just too many holes dug, too many traps laid.  I chalked it up as the rare show that does not have a happy ending.  I watched the first few episodes of season 3 and was reminded of exactly why I stopped watching 24.

Bump...
Netflix has seasons one and two on the Watch instantly,so I watched them....I've always like Mary Louise Parker.....I watched all of season one,and two....I watched part of season three lastnight....I would like to watch all of season three before coming to a final conclusion..But I agree with Spider...It Really gets to be a major stretch.....Almost cartoonish.....

I liked the first two seasons....It was Quirky, and different...but Season three is jumping the shark....
