Title: Justin Smiley lost for the season
Post by: doctord56 on November 30, 2008, 05:06:21 pm
A big loss for Justin, and a big loss for a team with very little OL depth.

Justin Smiley out for remainder of season
Dolphins left guard Justin Smiley confirmed he broke his right leg during the first half of today's game.

He is done for the remainder of the season.

"It's a bummer," he said. "It's kind of depressing. I'm happy the offensive line pulled together but obviously I'm not too happy about my situation."

Smiley said he heard the leg "snap," when he got rolled up during a running play.

"It happens a hundred times and you come out of it unscathed," he said. "This time wasn't one of those times."

The Dolphins used Andy Alleman at left guard today but coach Tony Sparano immediately mentioned recently signed Al Johnson as a possibility when asked about the state of his offensive line.

Too bad about Smiley. He's one of the good guys.

Smiley is expected to be placed on injured reserve. This is the second consecutive season he finishes the year on injured reserve, having been forced to the list by a shoulder injury.

Only now is the injury bug starting to affect this team.

Fortunately it's not an injury that will come back and keep bothering him. The shoulder from last year hasn't been a problem this season, so he appears to be "unlucky", not "fragile" or "injury prone".

That said, I haven't been impressed by his play. O-line is a big need. (Yes, we have many big needs).

If this was going to happen, now is the right time.  Outside of the Jets, the tough part of Miami's schedule is done and over with.  Christ, we don't even play Buffalo in Buffalo...it's a home game for the Bills and we'll be playing in the cozy confines of the (closed) Rogers Centre.

Playoffs are a long shot and 10-6 isn't.  This won't alter the overall results of the season.

I agree with the "unlucky" vs "injury prone" assessment completely...

I agree a little with the "not being impressed with his play" comment, but think it was more a matter of his meshing with the rest of the O-line, rather than Justin just playing poorly.

We were already rotating in Andy Alleman in at Guard spot, when Smiley had a neck stinger a few games ago...and a few plays for Nudkwe. So His back up has been seeing some live action here and there Lately....As much as I hate to see him go down,I'm confident that Alleman will play ok...

I met Andy Alleman's parents at the Raiders game.  They came over and introduced themselves and asked to take a picture with me.  I have a personalized jersey with #57 and they thought it was neat even though it had my name on it.  They were really nice.

With that said ... Andy has been playing quite a bit ... like every other series or two.  They have been mixing him in quite a bit and just an observation watching him ... he tends to be kind of physical and likes finishing plays.  I thought he was doing well replacing Ndukwe on several series.  With Long going down last week and now Smiley, he has played a lot in the last two games. In fact, they usually run behind him when he is in at RG.

Source? The latest I heard was this:

Meanwhile, a belated move to have the roof of the dome open at the Rogers Centre in Toronto for Sunday’s game is expected to fall short of the mark. The contract both teams signed mandates the roof be closed.

The roof will be closed.  I read a news story where Bills fans were petitioning for it to be open, but they said they will not open it because after baseball season is over it is closed and LOCKED for the winter.
