He was a hell of a coach, and a good guy. Thanks, Tony! I'm glad he got his ring after being robbed of one by Tampa.

After what happened to his son a few years back, he needs to retire and spend more time with the family. I'll always have a lot of respect for the Big "D".

I remember that pretty vividly...I lived in the same apt. complex as his son when it happened...police where everywhere...pretty sad day.

I've always had a ton of respect for him and is one of the reason why I hate Bellacheat so much...there was a game where he gave the cold shoulder to Dungy after it was over...Dungy is probably my favorite coach that didn't coach the Phins.

Maine was at that game.  It was the 2006 AFC Championship game if I'm not mistaken.

Bellicheat was just being the sore losing whiny little bitch that he is.

Class guy.  He'll be missed.

He was 139-69 (.668) for his career.  His teams won 10 games or more 10 out of 13 seasons.  That's pretty good.

I wonder if his 76% (85-27) winning percentage at Indy will every be touched.

I'm actually glad to see Dungy go.

I like the guy, but I think that the Colts have already peaked, and I'd rather him leave without incident, than the slow drain to mediocrity.

He was a great assistant coach to Peyton Manning.

The guy is a class act and a good football coach. I agree with Dave about the Colts peaking and it being a good time.

I did cover that game.  It was a great game and one of the last road trips that I really enjoyed.

Tony Dungy has to be one of my favorite people in sports ever.  I loved his book, I think even people that don't care all that much about Christian faith would love it as well.  Must read.

And, by the way, Bill Belichick gets an undeserved reputation.  I've talked to a lot of people over the years, be it assistant coaches off the record or guys like Peter King in a "let's get a beer" way.  The general consenses is that Bill Belichick is widely respected around the league and generally liked as well.  People have disagreements, it doesn't matter who you are.  Jeff Fisher is called out a lot by his peers as co-Chair of the NFL competition committee.  And, yet, he is still one of the most popular coaches among his peers in the league.

I don't want to completely derail this Dungy thread, but I've held my tongue long enough on the Belichick thing.  I don't like the guy due to the way he's treated me (like a peon...and, let's face it, I was) on a professional level.  But in the circle of the NFL his players love him and his peers like him.  And, on a personal level, he was always very nice to talk to.  I'll never forget when I introduced myself and shook his hand, he remembered my father from his coaching days.  He's a nice guy.  Let it go, don't let the winning cloud your mind with jealousy.

Pretty sick what Dungy did in Tampa too.  They had had 14 or 15 losing seasons in a row before he got there and then made the playoffs 4 out of 6 years before being replaced by an idiot owner.  He has made the playoffs 10 years in a row.

Not jealousy, I just don't like cheaters.

Jon gruden would have not won that super bowl if it was not for Dungy.

Maybe not, but Gruden did some things in his own right to that team that did win the Super Bowl.  And Dungy had a lot of help putting the team together.  Keep in mind that a large part of Tampa's defense, the strength of that team, was already in place before Dungy got there.  So he rode on some coat tails a little himself in that regard.

Dungy still had 5 starters on defense in his 2nd year that were there before.  They didn't have a lot of talent, the 4 years before Dungy got there they were 7-9, 6-10, 6-10 and 5-11.  Gruden had 9 starters on defense from Dungy in his Super bowl year.

It should be said that the Bucs faced the Raiders in the SB, so whatever credit you want to deduct from Gruden's accomplishment in Tampa would be made up for in credit for his old team making the SB.

Tony Dungy is a class act and the NFL will be poorer for losing his example.
