Wayne Huizenga's long-awaited sale of majority interest in the Miami Dolphins to Stephen Ross will become official Tuesday afternoon, according to multiple sources.

Huizenga has agreed to complete the sale to Ross in a deal that would give Ross 95 percent ownership in the franchise and leave Huizenga with 5 percent.

Ross had been looking for investors to come up with the financing needed to complete the purchase. But Huizenga has agreed to allow Ross to defer less than one-third of the payments to complete the transaction.

Huizenga has said the total value of the deal is $1.1 billion. Last year, Ross paid $550 million for 49 percent of the franchise and Dolphin Stadium.

Ross has been considering candidates for a CEO-type role on the business side. He earlier had discussions with former U.S. Tennis Association President Arlen Kantarian. Once the sale is completed, Dolphins executive vice president Bill Parcells would have a 30-day window in which he could collect the remaining $12 million on his four-year, $16 million contract and leave the franchise.

Parcells has declined to comment, but Huizenga has said that Parcells has indicated he will remain with the franchise.

Huizenga has been Dolphins majority owner since 1994.

Ross is expected to retain Dolphins President Bryan Wiedmeier.

And thus ends the era of one of the worst owners in sports history.  I've never forgiven H. Wayne Huizenga for selling off the 1997 Marlins.

Wayne gets somewhat of a bad rap. He did make bad front office decisions in the past but many of them were the sexy choices at the time. Hindsight is 20/20. If he had been the owner before the salary cap rather than the Robbies I think he would have thrown a lot of money around to make the Dolphins winners.

See ya Wayne.  It's been real, and it's been fun, but it aint been real fun.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the reason he had to because the citizens of Fl did not turn out for a World Series team?

I'll give him that much for the Marlins.... but what he did with the Dolphins is inexcusable.

I don't understand all the hate for Wayne.

What exactly did he do that was inexcusable?  He hired the guys that conventional wisdom said were good choices.  He improved the stadium on more than one occasion.  Things didn't always turn out great, but he seemed to really care, and was willing to open his wallet.

- Giving Dave Wannstedt a 2 year contract extension when fans were calling for his head after the 2003 season

- Hiring Rick Spielman as GM when he was with Wanny in Chicago and the last two years in Miami when there were way more qualified candidates available

- Hiring Dan Marino as a PR move, then having it backfire when Dan quits three weeks later.

- Blaming the "poor little kicker" rather than Wanny for the team's shortcomings in 2002 and 2003. 


These decisions are not "conventional wisdom".  They are downright idiotic.  And that's just the Wanny years.  Shall I continue?

Always knew when Wayne was arriving at Dolphin Stadium.........he had that big assed green Helicopter that flew over the parking Lot with a Limo waiting. Cops escorted with Sirens on to a private entrance. Must be nice I'd say to myself as I waited in that long line for the Turnpike.............. :|

Sure didn't seem like it when I tried to get tickets from Ticketmaster and got told not even an hour later that they were sold out.  I don't understand why people keep saying "no one went to the World Series" when I sure had a hell of a time getting in there.  I got to go to one game and I sat upper deck, center field, about half way up, worst seats in the house, and the place was packed.  Where do you people get this stuff?

for all the bad decisions wayne has made over the years, getting parcells to run the football side of the organization (and staying out of his way) more than makes up for everything.

if bob kraft had some of the clowns the dolphins have had running the football operation, im sure people wouldn't think he is such a wonderful owner.

I've always liked him because we share the same first name.

That would be a valid argument if he didn't sell half the stars on the team a few days after winning the damned thing.  If he had given the team a chance to sustain their 1997 success, people probably would have bothered to come.

And yes, all four home World Series games sold out to the tune of over 67,000 per.  The three home ALCS games averaged over 50,000 per.  Not a sellout, but more than the Braves' capacity.  The ALDS home games averaged 42,000.

He didn't say that nobody showed up for the world series.  He said that nobody showed up for a world series team (during the regular season).

Not to continue the hijack but this is true.  Fans want to see persistent greatness, not win one and sell the team.  Fans grow to love players and love the team, and to have all new guys every 3 years, fans can't grasp a hold on anyone.  Kids loved Dontrelle, the D-Train!  What do they do now?

Keep in mind that the Marlins had a couple years worth of good showings after they won their second World Series, and they still couldn't draw enough fans to break even.  Hence the second fire sale.

I was going to go point by point, but I decided not to.  I don't think any of those are valid criticisms against Wayne.

The only one that is even arguable is the contract extension of Wanny, but it was just a PR thing -- he never saw the end of the contract anyway.
