General Motors and FedEx pulled their TV ads, even though NBC lowered the price. Playboy canceled its annual party. Almost 200 fewer media credentials were issued.

The country's biggest party , the Superbowl, and what it has become , like the article described it :   an outright orgy of football, glitz and gluttony, a celebration of excess where too much was never enough even it  has boundries in this economy. This is one of the positive things I believe we are going to see out of this economy. No more throwing money away , the amount of money wasted in the past was just disgusting.

Just to play devil's advocate, you say "wasted" like the money goes into some kind of black hole. Someone is receiving a nice pay day when people spend like sailors on leave.

It would be nice if this would be the beginning of a ticket price reduction. It almost makes you wondr if the agent of the upcoming draft class are going to have a harder time this year also. I just can't see the salaries and prices to continue going up and up. Eventually this bubble has to burst as well.

How does companies pulling their tv ads affect the NFL? 

Because the TV station doesn't make money off those ads, therefore they pay less to show NFL games the following season.


We'll see what happens in that department.  There's a reason why they haven't agreed on a CBA yet.  As it stands, 2010 is scheduled to be uncapped, and there might not be any football in 2011 if a new agreement isn't reached.  One of the issues at the heart of the new agreement is rookie salaries.  In order to create more parity, there needs to be a limit on them.  Teams can't afford to keep paying such large contracts to college kids that have never set foot on an NFL field before.  If the kid turns out to be a bust, they're stuck with him. 

Right, next year they are going to start paying less.  They don't already have contracts or anything.

So you're saying that what the networks pull in now isn't going to affect what they'll be willing to pay next time? (Which is '11 for CBS and FOX, '12 for NBC and '14 for ESPN).

It doesn't work that way.  The owners have measures in had to have more franchise and other tags.  There will probably be fewer free agents.

As far as the bubble bursting, TV companies will eventually quit adding millions to TV contracts each renewal.  Rookie salaries are an issue much like the NFLPA trying to snag a larger portion of shared revenues.  Unlike the good old days where owners fought but stuck together--especially when players came calling for more money--owners fight amongst themselves because of "mavericks" like Jerry Jones who give Pepsi pouring rights when Coke is the "Official Drink."  Small-market teams like the Bengals and Bills aren't happy about keeping up with the salary cap when new stadiums and revenue within push the cap higher...they can barely afford to play.  I say move one of them to Los Angeles.

The yahoo article posted I think last monday talking about the bad economy,mentioned the ticket prices are lower,nose bleed seats that went for $3000 last year,are going for about $1600 on stub hub....I think part of tat might be the teams in the superbowl...While lower still not Common man prices....

I don't think the teams have anything to do with it. Last year was a 16-0 Patriots team going against the NY Giants. Why would anybody think that is more interesting than the Steelers and the Cardinals.

^^^ alot of the things I've seen (NFL network ) talk about there are almost No Cardinals fans there,they don't see any  Cardinals jersey's....

That undefeatd deal was sexy.  The upside is you have two of the NFL's largest market in XLII.  The bad new is it's an east coast thing.  I'm glad SB XLIII was as good as it was because I thought Pitt would roll.
