Title: February Trivia Game Post by: Dave Gray on February 03, 2009, 02:51:21 am 1) When a doctor is doing the whole "turn your head and cough" test, what's the relevance to turning your head?
Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on February 03, 2009, 08:56:23 am doc doesn't want you to cough in his face.

Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Philly Fin Fan on February 03, 2009, 01:16:22 pm My Dr. tells me to do that so I don't see her drooling.
Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Dave Gray on February 03, 2009, 01:22:47 pm Hoodie is correct. It's because you don't cough in their face.
Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Gabriel on February 03, 2009, 04:42:52 pm Hoodie is correct. It's because you don't cough in their face. I once had a 60ish female doc sit down on a stool so she was eye level with my junk when she asked me to cough. No turning was required. I don't think either Bush, or Carter, or Clinton, have been buried "anywhere" yet...since they're still kickin'. Probably not the right answer, but it is a "correct" answer. ;D Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Brian Fein on February 03, 2009, 05:38:11 pm I don't think either Bush, or Carter, or Clinton, have been buried "anywhere" yet...since they're still kickin'. They aren't buried. They reside in sarcophagi.
If you were looking for a different answer, then.... None. Wilson is not buried in a state, he's buried in Washington D.C., but that is still considered the Continental United States. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on February 03, 2009, 07:10:53 pm I don't think either Bush, or Carter, or Clinton, have been buried "anywhere" yet...since they're still kickin'. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Sunstroke on February 03, 2009, 09:23:38 pm Can anyone else throw a question out there to keep it going? I can't think of anything off the top of my head to ask... Thanks! Digital Underground was a popular rap act in the late 80's and early 90's. Which member of the group went on to even bigger success as a solo star? Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Tenshot13 on February 03, 2009, 09:57:50 pm Humpty Hump.
What country started the Christmas tradition of exchanging gifts? Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on February 03, 2009, 10:02:03 pm netherlands
Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Tenshot13 on February 03, 2009, 11:46:46 pm Actually, I just did a little more research on the subject and the answer is debatable. Some historians say it was the Romans in Italy, others say it was the Netherlands, and others still say it was in Jerusalem with the three wise men.
So I'll give Hoodie the go ahead on that one. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on February 04, 2009, 07:30:49 am Humpty Hump. Wrong answer!!!! Anyone else want to take a guess? Hint.... he met a sinister end in 1996. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Phishfan on February 04, 2009, 09:00:15 am I can't believe Humpty Hump was considered a bigger success than 2Pac by anyone and done with enough confidence that they didn't wait to hear they were incorrect.
Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on February 04, 2009, 11:01:48 am I can't believe Humpty Hump was considered a bigger success than 2Pac by anyone and done with enough confidence that they didn't wait to hear they were incorrect. Phish, you are correct. The answer is 2pac. Humpty Hump actually became known as Shock G, and did backup on 2pac's first album. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Phishfan on February 04, 2009, 11:16:51 am Keping with a music theme. Jethro Tull is a famous rock band who much like Lynard Skynyrd does not have any members of the band with that name. What was the original Jethro Tull famous for?
Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: bsfins on February 04, 2009, 11:18:50 am They are known for playing a Flute in Rock music..A floutist?
Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Sunstroke on February 04, 2009, 11:45:39 am Keping with a music theme. Jethro Tull is a famous rock band who much like Lynard Skynyrd does not have any members of the band with that name. What was the original Jethro Tull famous for? I love the band Jethro Tull, and remember the story well. They had actually tried a bunch of different names for the band as they played in small clubs, and one day their manager saw a flyer posted on the street for some machinery (or a lecture, I've heard conflicting stories) made by a local farmer/agriculturalist named...Jethro Tull. The manager borrowed the name and used it for the next show, and it was the biggest crowd they had ever had. They decided to keep the name from that point on. So I guess the answer is that the original Jethro Tull was famous for his farming acumen. ;D Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Brian Fein on February 04, 2009, 11:46:43 am 2Pac wasn't a member of Digital Underground, was he? I thought he was just a backup dancer in their video.

Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on February 04, 2009, 12:52:05 pm 2Pac wasn't a member of Digital Underground, was he? I thought he was just a backup dancer in their video. He most certainly was. He was not the lead rapper though, which is why not too many people really know of the connection. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: StL FinFan on February 04, 2009, 03:26:39 pm From Tupac's wiki page:
Shakur was initially a roadie and backup dancer for the alternative hip hop group Digital Underground.[2][3] Shakur's professional entertainment career began in the early 1990s, when he debuted his rapping skills on "Same Song" from the Digital Underground album This is an EP Release. He first appeared in the music video for "Same Song". After his rap debut, Shakur performed with Digital Underground again on the album Sons Of The P. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupac_Shakur Now let's argue about Dr. Dre, Easy-E, MC Ren and Ice Cube... ;) Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Sunstroke on February 04, 2009, 10:54:41 pm OK, next question...and knowing this group, probably a much too easy question. In the TV show "South Park," the actual town of South Park is located in what county in Colorado? Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Tenshot13 on February 05, 2009, 12:15:13 am Wrong answer!!!! Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Brian Fein on February 05, 2009, 06:20:20 pm If Fort Knox is where the official gold reserves are stored, where's the silver? In my safe deposit box...Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on February 05, 2009, 07:01:38 pm If Fort Knox is where the official gold reserves are stored, where's the silver? Nowhere. It used to be at West Point, but the USA long ago did away with a silver standard preferring a gold standard, which has also since gone away. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: fyo on February 05, 2009, 08:02:01 pm Nowhere. It used to be at West Point, but the USA long ago did away with a silver standard preferring a gold standard, which has also since gone away. "Nowhere" is incorrect. Failure to read the question being the key ;) Yet they still keep over 4-5 tons of gold at Fort Knox (well, technically, the United States Bullion Depository). They did away with the gold standard, there's still a sh*t-load of gold there. And the question didn't pertain to the gold standard... just the (main) location of the gold reserve. Anyway, you are correct about West Point. That's where the (main) silver reserves are located. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: stinkfish on February 05, 2009, 09:37:45 pm Why does hot water freeze faster than cold?
Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: StL FinFan on February 05, 2009, 09:41:26 pm it doesn't, unless you are talking about impure water, in which case heating it to a boil will raise the freezing temperature because when water has additives the freezing temperature is lowered, so the boiled water would freeze faster

Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Brian Fein on February 06, 2009, 11:04:04 am I wanna know if STL is right on the boiled water thing.
I think if you turned your tap to hot and filled a cup, and then turned it to cold and filled a cup, then put both cups in the freezer, there's no way the hot cup would freeze first. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Phishfan on February 06, 2009, 01:55:07 pm I wanna know if STL is right on the boiled water thing. I think if you turned your tap to hot and filled a cup, and then turned it to cold and filled a cup, then put both cups in the freezer, there's no way the hot cup would freeze first. It doesn't. It is a wive's tale that got around. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: StL FinFan on February 06, 2009, 02:04:04 pm You know how much chemisty and physics you have to take to go to vet school? A lot. :)
Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Dave Gray on February 06, 2009, 02:05:21 pm It doesn't. It is a wive's tale that got around. Yeah....it's bullshit. Hot water takes energy to turn to cold water, then takes energy to turn cold water into ice. (transferring to a new state of matter) Cold water gets to skip that first step. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: Brian Fein on February 06, 2009, 03:24:21 pm Actually, hot water requires the removal of energy to turn it to cold water.
I had heard earlier this week on TV that cold water boils faster than hot water, which I also thought was BS. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: fyo on February 06, 2009, 06:05:14 pm HOT AND COLD WATER
I'm a physicist. This is my area. I know what I'm talking about. It's true. Under *certain* conditions, hot water will freeze before cold water. It's called the Mpemba Effect. Yeah, it's unintuitive and sounds like utter bull. The real world is pretty complicated sometimes and "water" isn't just defined by it's temperature. When you take a container of hot water and start cooling it (e.g. sticking it in the freezer), the temperature is no longer going to be uniform. There might be convection as well. The amount of gas ("air": nitrogen, carbon dioxide etc) dissolved in the water is going to be different in the warm water compared to the cold water. All sorts of crap. Bottom line: It's true. It's proven. It's NOT well understood. You'd think something as seemingly simple as freezing water would be perfectly understood, but the number of variables is astounding. It's a bad trivia question, though: It's poorly understood and the right answer to the question is "it depends" (and it's not entirely clear on what). If you want to read more about the Mpemba Effect, there are numerous sources: Recent articles: American Journal of Physics: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2009AmJPh..77...27K American Physical Society: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2008APS..MAR.K1133T Physica A: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2008PhyA..387..757E Other links: Physics World: http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/print/24493 The Straight Dope: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/422/which-freezes-faster-hot-water-or-cold-water Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mpemba_effect Various universities: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/thermo/freezhot.html http://www.lsbu.ac.uk/water/explan.html#mpemba http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/hot_water.html#Experiments Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: StL FinFan on February 06, 2009, 07:43:33 pm Uh..so ask another question then.

He is a die hard Red Sox fan) Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: BoSoxGrl on February 13, 2009, 09:05:39 am Soooo close...that's half the answer, Tommy...but there is a bit more to the story as to the significance of the red chair.

Don't know what else you're looking for. Talked to Jerry again to get more info. That homer travelled 502 feet, and was the longest one ever hit at Fenway. Plus, the seat symbolizes the great baseball talent that has set foot in Fenway. That particular seat sells for $23 per game. What is the difference between a Savignon Blanc and a Fume Blanc? Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: BoSoxGrl on February 13, 2009, 04:41:44 pm I believe that one of them...the Fume kind has to be all the same type of grape but Savignon can have some sort of blend of grapes. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: fyo on February 13, 2009, 05:41:07 pm Both of you are incorrect. No, I am correct. I did not attempt to answer your question (since I don't know what characterizes a Fume Blanc), but I know Sauvignon Blanc very well. It's a specific grape. There's also Cabernet Sauvignon (used in red wines), which is related to the Sauvignon blanc (specifically a cross between it and the Cabernet Franc grape). Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: stinkfish on February 13, 2009, 11:58:01 pm Soooo close...that's half the answer, Tommy...but there is a bit more to the story as to the significance of the red chair. It's also the "longest" home run in Fenway's history.Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on February 14, 2009, 04:41:00 pm OK. This is for all you wine snobs out there. What is the difference between a Savignon Blanc and a Fume Blanc? nothing, they are synonyms. some wineries may distinguish them for their own marketing purposes, but any wine that can be accurate labels as one can be labeled as the other. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: YoFuggedaboutit on February 14, 2009, 06:00:35 pm nothing, they are synonyms. some wineries may distinguish them for their own marketing purposes, but any wine that can be accurate labels as one can be labeled as the other. Hoodie is correct but for the wrong reasons. There is no difference between the two. Robert Mondavi started the concept of Fume Blanc. He had found an old barrel of Savignon Blanc that he had forgotten was there. He had to find a way to sell it, so he labeled it a Fume Blanc. While being in the barrel longer may have an affect on the taste and nuance of a red wine, it is barely noticable with a white wine. I learned this from my days as a waiter and bartender. Title: Re: February Trivia Game Post by: fyo on March 02, 2009, 05:37:25 am Now, because of what football stadium was the forward pass legalized? Don't know... and not sure what you mean... As I recall (from what I've read and heard over the years), the first intentional forward pass was thrown over a 100 years ago (there were quite a lot of articles a few years ago on the 100-year-anniversary). I though the pass was (always) legal, but considered a fumble (and thus exceptionally risky). The rules were changed, slowly, but there was still a period when catches in the end zone were illegal (resulting in a touchback instead of a touchdown). That first forward pass was in a West Coast college game, but I don't remember which college (or stadium, if that's the one you're looking for). |
