Title: Obama addresses Congress
Post by: Dave Gray on February 24, 2009, 10:52:19 pm
I thought Obama was great.  I particularly liked his line about dropping out of college not being an option.  "If you do, you're not only failing yourself, you're failing your country."  I thought he was respectful of the other side and seemed to keep both sides happy.

I am now watching Jindel's rebut.  He sucks as a speaker.  He sounds like Kenneth from the show 30 Rock.

What did you guys think?

First off.  I pretty much do not believe a word that comes out of a Democrat or Republicans mouth.  They talk financial responsibility, then spend like they have an endless bank account ( Which basically they do )  They have ran this country into the ground & frankly I'm just sick of listening to either party.

Second.  He talked the talk, but gonna have to take a wait & see.  Talk is cheap.  Results are what count.  I'm already tired of hearing him talk about the deficit they inherited.   You might have inherited it, but it yours now. Stop making excuses. Kinda like a new HC of the Phins.  I do not want to hear him remind me where they were & why they still suck.

It will take about 3 Yrs, but I want to see how they are going to pay back that much of the deficit with the albatross they just passed.

The only thing we can do is wait.  However, if they have F-ed up.  We are all screwed.

Uncanny.  After I made my 30 Rock Comparison on Jindal and Kenneth, I Googled both their names and apparently, I'm not the only one who thought it.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/24/bobby-jindal-or-kenneth-f_n_169693.html

Also, did anyone watch this on MSNBC?  When Jindal first came out, he was all robotic and stiff and had this fake smile on.  You could hear Olberman off mic say "uuuuuuuuh god."  Hilarious.

I'm so swamped with school crap that I had to miss it. I'll have to try to catch it sometime today.

Dphins4me, if you don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth why do you bother watching or commenting? At this point, you're going past disagreement into flat out whining. If you did vote 3rd party, that guy lost. Get over it, get involved and work harder to get him (or her) elected next go around. Your incessant whining is quite tiresome and inhibits the ability to actually have a straight forward discussion.

When will Republicans learn that they need someone who is a good speaker, not someone with experience, ideas and a track record of success.

I particularly liked his line about dropping out of college not being an option.  "If you do, you're not only failing yourself, you're failing your country."

I really thought that was great. This is so true. Our country's advantage is in it's superior university system, and we need to be utilizing it to the best of our abilities. There is a reason our schools have such a foreign presence even in the tiny ones.

On another note, I like Jindal a lot. I have been following him for maybe a year and a half and really believe he has a lot of answers. He is health care reform personified.

I know you guys are going to be absolutely turned off at the fact that this is in the NRA honoring him, but get past that and you see a great speaker:

Dphins4me, if you don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth why do you bother watching or commenting?
To stay informed?  To continually point out their lies?  Kinda stupid of me I guess.  How many politicians say they want us to be in Iraq?  Where are we?

Heck Obama is expanding the troops in Afghanistan? I thought he said he was bringing them home?  Oh wait his actions do not matter, its his words that count.

At this point, you're going past disagreement into flat out whining. If you did vote 3rd party, that guy lost. Get over it, get involved and work harder to get him (or her) elected next go around. Your incessant whining is quite tiresome and inhibits the ability to actually have a straight forward discussion.
Gonna have to explain how I'm whining.  Not the least big upset my guy lost.  Didn't have a snow balls chance in hell ( If you believe in hell ).

How can you have a straightforward conversion on empty talk?  Does history not tell you its their actions that count?  George Bush senior stood up there & promised no new taxes & told us to read his lips.   What happened?

Do you actually think Obama is not in favor of bigger Gov. when the stimulus package is nothing but Gov expansion?   Since when has the Gov ever scaled back once its expanded?  Just once throughout history?    Do you believe him on that point?

Hell, didn't Obama promise to cut out the pork in Wash. during his campaign & even last night?   Then the very first major thing he pass is full pork & made he excuses for it, by actually saying.  " When has anything this big, not had some pork in it? "
Do you believe him on that point?  Do you believe his actions or his words?

They all talk the game, but always have an excuse for why they are not doing what they promised to do.  They know the general population is full of people who do not care & are to ignorant to understand, because they educated them.

And I'm whining for pointing this out?  This is not I hate Obama.  I'd say the same no matter who was making the speech, even if my guy had won.  I'm watching their actions, not their words.  Something more people in America should do.

Its kinda funny.  I get accused on calling people mindless sheep etc.., when I have not do so or thought it, but yet do nothing but get personally attacked.

Analogy:
If the other in your life told you they loved you & then went out & had sex with someone else, then came back & told you they loved you.  Do you actually believe they love you?  If so, then you would begullible.

Anyone that has read anything I have posted knows I have pointed out many times Pres. & their 10 Yrs plans.

Last night, Obama said they had already found 2 trillion dollars that will be saved in how many Yrs?

Wild Guess?  Anyone?

Yet, I'm being called whining for not believing their words & wanting to watch their actions.

In saying that.  I will give him credit for saying he will cut the deficit in 4 Yrs.  Lets see where we are in 3.  At least he did not say 10.

Staying informed is a good thing. Constantly whining is not and saying the same thing over and over is not.

You say you're watching their actions, but Obama has barely been in office for a month. I'm taking the wait and see approach.

Gulliable? No. In an open relationship? Yes. Love and sex are NOT the same thing.

Oh boy.

For the first time I am a little nervous about our President.  I am thinking that he's about to out punt his coverage.

Under promise and over deliver.  Not hard to do.  The guy went from solving our recession to making sure every American has a college degree to medical insurance for all to (wrongly) stating that America invented the car and promising to cure cancer.

The guy said that we would cure cancer on his watch.  That's great, Prez.  But what the FUCK do you think people have been trying to do for decades?

Oh, all that and let's finally figure out the two wars.

I was a little insulted last night.  I'm not much for ear candy.  And last night was ear candy, sorry.

"The check is in the mail?"  Really?  WHAT CHECK?

You're going to magically reform health care in the NEXT YEAR?  Huh.  I guess no one else has ever tried that?

I love ambition.  Don't get me wrong.  And I understand his whole thing is "we can do more than one thing at a time."  Of course you can.  But why not toss in "we'll colonize the moon by the end of my term to ease over crowding" while you're at it.

There is ambition and then there are pipe dreams aimed at people that speech writers, apparently, don't think know the difference.

Good speech?  Yes.  Did he come down a couple notches in my eyes after last night?  Maybe not quite yet.  If he on the clock in a massive way now?  Yep.  I expect cancer to be cured by June.  I expect health care to be completely overhauled and running like a fine tuned engine this time next year.  I expect to see a flood of Americans graduating from college in the next two years.  I expect Detroit to pump out the world's best cars soon and I also expect to see some wind turbines on my street by 2011.

You're on the clock, Prez.  You set the goals, now go achieve them.

"The check is in the mail?"  Really?  WHAT CHECK?

He didn't say it was in the mail, he said it is on the way. He was referring to the payroll tax breaks that will be implemented April 1.

I think we just have to wait and see what happens. I am holding out hope that we can get the economy back on track with this package. I don't believe I have ever believed all the promises I have heard from a President and this time is not different. We aren't going to know anything for a while so let's sit back and hope for the best and do what we can.

Maybe he's taking his cue from Washington State which just sent out $1.00 checks to 250,000 food stamp recipients.

Men dreamed of going to the moon for centuries before JFK promised we would get there.

I guarantee you this -- Obama will not achieve all of the goals he has set forth.  But at least he has good goals and he seem genuinely determined in reaching them.

And he did not promise to cure cancer during his administration, he said, "It will launch a new effort to conquer a disease that has touched the life of nearly every American by seeking a cure for cancer in our time."

to (wrongly) stating that America invented the car

The president was not wrong.  You may not agree with him, but he is not wrong.

To say he is wrong would be like saying that on a history test answer the question, "when did world war 2 begin?"  "Sept 1, 1939" because you were looking for the answer "Dec 7, 1941"

There are multiple correct answers to who invented the automobile depending on if you define an automobile as one that has in internal combostine engine or if you also include steam power, and if by invent you mean patent, design, or build the first working one.

One of those correct answers is George B. Selden.  You may not agree with the president but he did not state anything that was wrong!

When something changes I'll change my tune.  Until then they are doing the same thing, so I have to say the same thing.

You say you're watching their actions, but Obama has barely been in office for a month..
Been a busy month for him.  Its not like he has been feeding the cows back at his ranch.

I'm taking the wait and see approach..
Wasn't that stance in my first reply in this thread?

Actually said it twice in that thread.

Second.  He talked the talk, but gonna have to take a wait & see.

Yeah, all the time.

Get out of Iraq in 16 months.  Increase troops in Afghanistan.  That's been his talk sine way into his campaign.

It sounds like that's changing to 2/3 out in 19 months in Iraq.  But the push to Afghanistan still stays.

Again just want to say.  Watch what they do & not what they say.  Actions speak louder than words.   The man has no intention of stopping wasteful spending he is helping light the fuses on even more Gov spending..

Here we are in a bad spot & all these guys care about is their pet projects.  Can't really say he is doing this because of the bad economy.  We were in a bad economy when he was running for election & making these promises.  Please no one tell me he will cut earmarks later after the economy is better.

Quote
President Barack Obama will break a campaign pledge against congressional earmarks and sign a budget bill laden with millions in lawmakers' pet projects, administration officials said.

Administration budget chief Peter Orszag and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel both downplayed the $410 billion spending bill and signaled Obama would hold his nose and sign it.

Orszag said: "We want to just move on. Let's get this bill done, get it into law and move forward."

Said Emanuel: "That's last year's business.

Obama will sign spending bill despite earmarks (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iIg34ct-JZVW_v1Nx7Yg9GhIScqwD96LQ9FO0)

Nobody is attacking you.  It's just strange that a major campaign promise said on the stump every single day of Obama's life for 2 years would fly under your radar.

McCain constantly talked about pork-barrel spending, Obama talked about getting out of Iraq and into Afghanistan.  If you missed such a giant aspect of his campaign, maybe you weren't giving his ideas a chance.

One post probably not.  Two?    I say attack because it has nothing to do with the topic & just about me.   I missed or forgot it.    I probably push it aside & did not listen well enough on that topic.   I'm human.

Has nothing to do with his ideas.  I'm not upset he is moving troops to Afghanistan

Then why did you bring it up as a point of contention?

This is not an attack post, it is an honest question.

It was in line with them telling us one thing to get elected then doing another.

Other than attacking me.  What is your point?

You obviously follow things very closely for the most part based on your posts, so it comes across as strange that you missed a huge campaign issue.

It was over 6 months ago.   I will admit I do not follow things they say or are doing over there nearly as close as I should.
