Title: Rule of thumb: The Newer model is generally better
Post by: bsfins on March 04, 2009, 02:29:37 pm
I’ve sort of run into this dilemma fairly often lately…(I also have too much time on my hands to think about these things…) I know it varies between what you’re buying, but my assumption has generally been  the newer model is the old model guts, with a few tweaks (maybe fixed a flaw) in a fancy new shell….

The Sega Genesis, had a couple of models, the Playstation, the Psone…My Big screen T.V., I bought the series 6,but had the options of the series 5,and 7.…There was a big difference between the 5,and 6,but not a lot between the 6 and 7...(other than price!)

On my lunch hour today, Someone I used to hand out with called me to ask If I’d tst drive a couple of vehicles that he was looking to buy….Both are the same Model vehicle, pretty much the same specs….just different years….(they’re both amazingly similar to the one he’s got, with more bells and whistles!)

I like the Motorola a1200 phone, but they’ve got a newer model the A1600 (the only spec difference I see is the camera is more Mega pixels, and more memory, and doesn’t come in different colors…)

My Computer speakers, I bought the old model, which Most people have told me the new ones aren’t as good as the old ones….

So do you feel like this generally true?

I know, some things get added to the new models…(the Psone, had the power converter moved to the plug, lowering heat to the unit, and allowing them to make it smaller, and adding the plug in for separate screen, etc, etc…

For me it varies. I got the first Game boy advance thinking it'd be the only one they ever made (HUGE MISTAKE), the newer GBA was light years better. The Wii looks like a glorified Gamecube... Fooled me once Nintendo

I actually like the older consoles PS1, 2, SNES, NES, Genesis etc. better than their newer slimmer/teeny counterparts. Aesthetically I like the older ones, and in some instances, like the link cable port on the PS1 being removed (and yes, I used it), newer versions just never did it for me.

Technology in general though IMHO - the new versions always rock; video cards, computer parts, accessories, most games, TV's, phones, monitors etc. etc.

Yes, it's generally true.  Especially with technology, companies are able to negotiate better prices and higher quality stuff when producing in mass.

Some companies are using this model in their plan, like Apple.  The iPod is the same price, but new models have new features, larger harddrives, better parts, etc.

You also saw the redesign of the DS, PS2, etc.  It doen't ALWAYS work like that (the current PS3 isn't a good as the original model, but that's a price issue), but mostly, newer is better.  They work out the kinks.

I tend to sometimes think the older things are built better....I use my mom's sewing machine all the time, and her old had motor like a tank....Her new one while it can do 40 different type of stitches, the motor whines through even the lightest fabric......

I love alot of the older games more than I do,the consoles themselves..I still miss dark Wizard, and would love to find a working rom..I've even boutght a few disks off of Ebay, but they didn't work....
