That's a definite possibility. 

I read an interesting article once that stated this case would galvanize the Austrian parliament to repeal some of the very powerful privacy laws that exist in that country. What do y'all think about that? I'm a bit mixed. I can understand the need for families to function without the interference of the government into their personal affairs. But at the same time, I can understand the need to protect children from their family members.

Kneejerk reactions are always possible when something crazy like this happens.  But as terrible as this is, it's so isolated.  A parents locking someone up in their basement for 20+ years and secretly fathering a bunch of their children is pretty uncommon.

I guess it depends on the privacy laws.  ...especially in the case where someone goes missing.

As far as you know.  Two years ago people never would have never suspected this dude his his daughter chained in the basement.  Your neighbors do things that would make your skin crawl.  You just don't know about it.

The question is...do you have a right to know about those activities?

Do I have a right no know?  ...probably not.   But those people have a right not to be abused.

I feel sorry for a lot of people in this world, but this poor girl, I can't even imagine how she can ever be anything that resembles a normal human being.

It's stories like this that make me never want to watch the news.

I find it horrifying to think of things that go on with every day people you encounter all the time...and the secrets that they keep.  Like the woman that works in my building and took part in offing her husband.

It's creepy and weird and makes me wonder how many normal people are REALLY out there?

Normal is such a relative term that maybe what is considered normal is really abnormal?

The psychiatric evaluation primarily. This guy is soooo creepy.

Looks like after hearing his daughter's testimony, he finally saw the error of his ways and pleaded guilty to all charges.  He's looking at life in prison, and I hope he gets it.

Dude's 78, how long is life at this point? I don't think there is a punishment that is proper for what he did to his daughter. She's going to suffer for the rest of HER life, which will be far greater than his

I'll give him about a week before he gets beat within an inch of his life by another inmate.... or ten.... or twenty.

Except for the weather, "normal", or "common" is not newsworthy.

The more abnormal/uncommon something is, the more newsworthy it is.
