Title: Life sucks, round two with a kidney stone
Post by: raptorsfan29 on September 23, 2009, 01:39:46 pm
title says it all. I am still paying for the first round. Luckily the hospital i was at paid for everything ($10,000), i went to another hospital before going to the hospital i was at now. So i still have about 500 to go to pay for all of it.

Just to clarify, people probably don't know any of these names but i will tell anyways just to explain my situation. I went to Wentworth Douglas hospital in Dover, NH because i am use to that hospital, had tests and that is where i found out i had the stone.

The doctor tells me that since i live in maine i should go to a hospital in maine because i could get maine care, that would pay for all my issues since i didn't have insurance, (well one that didn't cover pre-exsisting conditions), so that is why i went to York Hospital in York, maine.

As of right now i am taking Pain pills, and they seem to be helping.

We are now tied for the number of times we have had this issue. Here is my story about it.

The first time it struck me at work. I actually noticed it in the fron rather than in the back where the kidneys are. I thought it was a gas bubble at first but it got progressively worse. After a few hours I was doubled over and breaking into sweats from the pain. I was scared to deat because I had no idea what it was. When I got to the hospital I started to dry heave and luckily got into a room quickly. They gave me some mild pain medication and took me to radiology where they put a dye into my IV and were taking time lapse X-rays. The tech told me it was very important I stay very still through the whole process. Wouldn't you know it, the pain meds wore off and I was doubled over again. The tech went to get a nurse who gave me a shot of dilaudid in my IV. I melted into the table after that.

The second time they must have advanced their methods a bit because I got stronger pain medication immediately and went to get a MRI rather then the X-rays. The only probnlem was they don't read the MRIs at that hospital only at the main one downtown so I had to wait for a very long time before being released because it was a Saturday night and the other hospital was busy reading more serious MRIs before mine. It was cool though as I was in a private room inside the ER and had my own TV. The only issue was the pain meds wore off before the pharmacies opened on Sunday.

What I'm more interested in is why your hospital paid your bill?

Interesting since I still have about $5000 to go on my bills and had insurance.

You need a better doctor. I wouldn't have made it through without them.

Gotta love our healthcare plans here. I work and pay for everyone else's medical insurance..... ::)

Or, not have any insurance or job. If that would've been the case, I wouldn't be responsible for my bills. I probably wouldn't have been denied a few treatments and stuff, too.

bumped to ask people that have had kidney stones before.

How do you know if a kidney stone is close to passing, I feel like i have to go #1, but i can't and i am getting a little pain in the back and in the front. I'm guessing  the kidney stone is finally making a run for the exit. but i don't have to much experience on passing the stone, just having the stone.

The discomfort you feel are classic signs of passing the stone.

Here is a resource for you:

I was so loaded on painkillers I never knew when either one passed.

another update, i went to the doctors today, got an xray.

I am in the process of passing a stone, i got fragmented stones left from the procedure i had before.

Apparently i have a obstruction of some kind with the kidney which is preventing the other fragmented stones to go away. So i will have to come back in 2-3 weeks to see the big stone passes and discuss options to deal with the obstruction.

I've heard that there are some kind of sonic hot-tubs that create vibrations that break down the stones, without surgery.  Have you looked into this?

I did and i have had this, it's the main reason why i have kidney stone fragments, and why all the stones i have in my system are passable. The big one i have is on its way out, which is good.

The only problem i am having is that there is something not allowing those stone fragments to be released from my system. The doctors will look at it in 3 weeks when i go back.
