Dolphins Sign Lydon Murtha; Waive Shawn Murphy Today at 5:46pm The Miami Dolphins have signed tackle Lydon Murtha from the practice squad of the Detroit Lions. To make room on the roster for Murtha, the Dolphins waived guard Shawn Murphy. The 6-7, 315-pound Murtha was born in Homestead, Florida and was a seventh-round draft choice of the Detroit Lions in the 2009 NFL draft out of the University of Nebraska. He was signed to the Lions practice squad on September 7 after being released by Detroit on September 5. At Nebraska, Murtha was a fixture on the Husker offensive line for all four seasons, starting 23 of 40 games. He was also a four-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection. Murphy was originally a fourth-round draft choice by Miami in the 2008 NFL draft. He was inactive for the first five games in 2009 and for all 16 games in 2008. Not sure what one can reasonably expect from one of those... Anybody hazard a guess? Looking at the other guards taken in the late third to mid-fourth round in 2008 (Shawn Murphy was the 11th pick of the fourth round -- next guard to come off the board was in the latter half of the 5th round), only one of four (incl. Murphy) has started a game, while the other three have yet to be activated for a single game this season. I agree. Murphy apparently was starting at the beginning of training camp. Not sure what happened there.
