Dolphins hire ex-Giants assistant Sheridan to coach linebackers

NFL.com Wire Reports

Former New York Giants defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan has been hired as the Miami Dolphins' inside linebackers coach.

Sheridan was fired by the Giants two weeks ago. In Miami, he replaces George Edwards, who left after five seasons to become the University of Florida's defensive coordinator.

Sheridan coached the Giants' linebackers from 2005 to 2008 and was the team's defensive coordinator in 2009. The Giants gave up 427 points this season, third-worst in the NFL.

The Dolphins announced the hiring Tuesday. They're still seeking a defensive coordinator to replace Paul Pasqualoni, who was fired after two seasons. Miami is expected to interview Mike Nolan, who left the Denver Broncos on Monday after only one season as their defensive coordinator.

Sources told NFL Network's Jason La Canfora on Monday that Nolan was a candidate to become the defensive coordinator in Miami.

NFL.com's Steve Wyche reported Monday that the Dolphins asked the Broncos for permission to speak to Nolan, but it isn't known if that call caused the split in Denver. Nolan told The Denver Post only that he and the Broncos had "mutually agreed to part ways," and a team-issued statement echoed that sentiment.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
