I would want to go the other way -- have less stuff and more open space.

I don't think I could go that small, but I'm ok living in a tiny space. It's just me and the dog. However, I've got crap all over the place. It's starting to clutter up the 600-700 feet I have now. I'm selling off, donating, or giving away a bunch of stuff.

I've been to Ikea and I've seen how they can furnish a 300 square foot home.  But 178 is just too tiny for me to think of right now.

I think that is smaller than the dog's crate...so...no.
But I am with Dave...I am all about maximizing the space in a room and would rather have less "stuff" and more open space.

Side note:  No way could I live without the cal/king bed.

I lived in smaller, for 3 years, with a roommate.  The dorms at FAU are remodeled military barracks and no bigger than 10x12

OMG! The guy got a job with Robert Couturier & Associates based on pictures?? Wow.

On another note- Brian, when you talk about your dorm though, think about this- that didn't include a kitchen or bathroom. You had the "luxury" of a cafeteria and probably a hallway community bathroom. This guy had all that crammed together (although bathroom SF is usually not included when giving numbers for houses and apartments as it is not "living space").

When I took my network job at the old One on One Sports Network I had a very tiny apartment close to the studios in Northbrook, Illinois.  The bathroom was so small that you couldn't close the bathroom door if you were sitting on the toilet.  That place couldn't have been more than 250 sq ft.  But all I had with me was a hot plate, clothes and a box full or notebooks and pens.

Smallest I ever did was 786 sq ft with a wife and child.  Even that got cramped.  I couldn't do 178 sq ft, even alone.

It depends. Around here they use the term "under air" to mean what is heated and air conditioned, so only the garages are excluded.

The studio apt I had down in Pompano Beach was 450 sq ft...and was easily the smallest accommodations I've ever had. That said, I lived there almost 4 years, and really didn't have a problem with the cramped quarters, which is strange, given my size.

Interesting, Jvides lists his smallest house, it's 20ft bigger than the house I live in now! and Maine mentions Northbrook, IL. Where my Dad's parents have lived for the past 35 years.....

I admit, for me, I don't use the space I have wisely, I have a china cabinet, a bar,6 seat dining room table,in the bedroom 2 Dressers, entertainment center, and my waterbed, squeezed in the corner a Treadmill..Like Maine mentioned, My bathroom is tiny,my kitchen is barely useable (Alot of small bedroom apts I've been to have bigger kitchens....

That is not actually an unussual size for NYC.  The peice was not a "wow that small" but "here is how one person arraings a NYC apt."

Maybe Janet can tell us the square footage of her apt.

Actually Brian talking about his dorm is not far off.  Yes, there was a cafe, but in most small apt don't dedicate much space to the kitchen area.  One summer I lived in a 8 x 10 dorm room for the summer (solo) but was no meal service.  My kitchen was a small fridge, microwave, hot plate and toaster oven.  (don't tell housing about the hot plate and toaster oven those were against the rules).

There are apts in my building smaller than that one.  I fortunatlly do not live in one that small.
