Title: SeaWorld Whale kills trainer as spectators watch

Man. I was just there a few weeks ago.  That would have been horrible to see.

What do you think is going to happen to the whale? What should be done? I don't think it can be released once in captivity.  I'm guessing just ship it somewhere where it can be watched and viewed , not interacted with.

This has happened before.  They have whales that don't perform, so I guess it will just become one of those.

I read this one was already in the "not performing" category since it killed someone else a few years ago. I think Sea World needs to review the steps it takes to insure the safety of its employees, but that's about it. These are dangerous wild animals and the trainers know the risks their taking. This is sad, but it's no more surprising than a race car driver getting killed on the track.

The local news cost me to miss the first US goal during hockey yesterday because of this story. They reambled on for about 30 minutes with no new information. Just use the damn scroll if you can't add anything to your broadcast (which is interrupting regular programming by the way) for thirty minutes.

Sorry about the rant.

I think if you are in a "high-danger" profession (Military infantry, Nascar Driver, Sky-Diver, interaction with wild / killer animals, working with explosives), you just have to understand that sometimes shit like this happens. Like Steve Irwin getting killed by a Stingray. It's just the nature of the profession that a wild animal will - well - be wild.

Worst example of that was the slow speed chase of OJ during the NBA finals.

I read that they aren't going to put this whale down which is good.

Speaking of TV hijacks, I remember in the late 90's the Magic were in the playoffs, and there was a nasty storm coming to Central Florida and they kept interrupting the game to give updates on the storm. People pitched a fit about it and that night, there were around 10 tornadoes and about 20 people were killed.

When the trainer went to work that day, she probably thought dressing up in a seal costume for the company party would be great fun...

Warnings about upcoming dangerous weather and general news are two differnent things IMHO.  Interupt what every the hell you want to warn me I need to take cover from a tornado. Or for that matter if there was a shark attack on the beach and it is believed there will be more then breaking regular programming to tell people to go out and warn anyone they see to get out of the water is more important than regular progamming.

One person dies of a whale attack at seaworld, I don't need updates to know she is still dead.

Did you mean the reporting break in reference or the "wild animal" comparision?

Pretty obvious i was referring to the pointless breaking news interruption Phishfan was talking about.

Well they don't call them "Killer" because they're cute and fluffy.

One of the most awesome (and terrible at the same time) documentaries I've ever seen is about killer whales.  The one where cameras capture how the whales beach themselves to grab the poor seals.  Pretty awesome.  They even beat the shit out of the seal by playing volleyball with it by smacking it with their fins.

I also remember a group of them devouring a great white shark near San Francisco.  They had it on the news.  I don't remember the specifics since I was a kid but the headline and video was enough for me to remember how awesome it was forever.

Yes! I remember one incredible video as well. It showed this poor seal trapped on an Ice floe. It showed it surrounded by Killer whales all flapping thier tails in the water causing the thing to finally topple over. They said it was a very important video because it demonstrated how organized they were.

I love orca whales, and not only have a large amount of orca art (hanging art, abstract sculpture) at home, but count my "orca adventure" to be one of the most significant "character shaping" events of my life. That said, they are "wild" animals, and the moment you forget that, it's your ass getting chewed on.

The other person that the same Orca killed was a person who broke into the park and decided to take a swim with the Orcas.  He died due to his own stupidity.

Maybe he is pissed off because he used to have the whole ocean to swim in and now all he has is a little pool.

^^^ That wasn't the only one. This was the third death this whale had involvement in, two trainers and the dumbass.

^ I stand corrected.  I only knew about the dumbass and the trainer.  I just saw where he killed another trainer in a different marine park.

Watch this video and read the commentary. These orca still seem to have their hunting skills intact. Also, both the seal and the great white videos are listed next to this one.

Keiko from "Free Willy" was released back into the wild where he joined a pod and lived out the rest of his life.  I watched a documentary about it.  Here is the trailer:

He died after only two years I think. It wasn't very successful.

I really didn't know. I guess if it can be then thats a good option. Of course Disney/Seaworld has millions wrapped up in it and if they can squeeze more out of it by just displaying it , they will.  I'm sure they won't advertise it, but a known KILLER killer whale would bring people in to see it like King Kong.    :|

The thing that I was floored about this story was from my local news lastnight....They kept saying...."Coming up the Autopsy results from the trainer that was killed by the killer whale in Seaworld in Florida...."    Really? She was killed by a Killer Whale! Sorry it just killed me, all three stations did a story on it....

Ahhhh, the beauty of a good pun.

Coming up the Autopsy results from the trainer that was killed by the killer whale in Seaworld in Florida...."    Really? She was killed by a Killer Whale!

It was a conspiracy...two walruses and the moray eel were in on the hit. This will all come out in the investigation.

There not sure of the cause of death....they have it narrowed down to:

a) drowning
b) sunburn poisoning
c) gun shot wound
d) frostbite

Not until lab results come back will they be sure what caused her to die.
