Title: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Pats2006 on March 11, 2010, 09:21:59 pm Wow, this season sucks. How did that kid with the mullet not get in?

This always happens on Idol in the early rounds because you're not voting off the worst, you're voting for the best.
The girls actually are a much better example. There's no way that the blue haired chick was the worst girl...not even close. But for people that like her type of folk music, there's Crystal, who was better in the last few weeks. Race, gender, age, and genre will play heavily into the choices for the next few weeks, more than just overall quality. The mullet guy was one of 4 or 5 guitar players, but wasn't the best of them. He was also vying for the role of the cute, young kid, but lost out to that other guy. He also lost the innocent thing to that country-ish kid. Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Defense54 on March 12, 2010, 07:13:01 am I'm still surprised that Hot Miami chick never made it.
Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: StL FinFan on March 12, 2010, 12:07:33 pm I think more girls and women watch the show than boys and men. Look at the finalists the last couple of seasons.

I agree. I would think the teeny Bopers would look up to girl like miami over the Hippy with bad Teeth singing 60's music. Don't get me wrong, I think she is a damn fine artist, I'm just surprised America does as well. They are usually so shallow. I like the women this year better then the men. All the Guys reminded me of a MTV unplugged video. Acoustic and a bench. I wanted to throw up already. Thats why Fat mike stood out so much. Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Dave Gray on March 12, 2010, 02:18:50 pm Not only do more young girls and women watch, but they undoubtedly vote more. I've been watching this show for going on a 3rd year, but I've never voted, and likely never will. I just don't care.
Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: StL FinFan on March 12, 2010, 02:42:01 pm What I don't get is why so many people are outraged about Alex and Lily being voted off. If all those people voted, maybe the result would have been different.

Yea, look at Obama ;D Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Defense54 on March 14, 2010, 05:45:09 pm Not only do more young girls and women watch, but they undoubtedly vote more. Your raving like a lunitic on a street corner. :-* Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Dave Gray on March 16, 2010, 11:55:18 pm I think that this group is getting much better. Nothing I heard tonight was awful, and I think that some people that I previously haven't liked all that much are coming along. Aaron did well tonight, and looks a lot better now that the stylist got to his hair and got rid of his redneck cut.
Paige was also better. I think that the guy I liked the most, Andrew, was pretty weak. Ellen said it was his best. Strangely, I thought it was his worst yet. I think that even Tim, while his voice wasn't great, put together an interesting cover of the song, and would rather have that than something generic. In danger of going home: Tim Andrew Lacie I think that Tim could get through, based on the Sanjaya effect, and that Andrew might be in trouble. Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Defense54 on March 17, 2010, 07:07:40 am All I know is that I want to reach into the TV and Bitch slap Kara everytime she mentions Lyrics in a song. I think thats all she cares about.
Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Dave Gray on March 17, 2010, 01:32:21 pm Yeah, Kara is the worst.
Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: StL FinFan on March 17, 2010, 10:28:49 pm Tim was clearly the worst this week, imo. American Idol is racist. R&B singers don't have a chance.
Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Dave Gray on March 23, 2010, 11:54:46 pm Top 11:
- Lee was boring and okay had an okay vocal. I didn't agree with the panel. I just don't find him all that special. I didn't even remember his name. - Paige was awful. I think that her loud notes were good, but her softer parts (most of the song) were awful. - Tim was surprisingly decent, I think. I liked him more than the judges did. - Aaron was okay. Some notes were off, but you could tell that he was sick. I give him a pass. I'm sick of that song, though. - Crystal was very good, I thought. I'd like to see her pick something and be surprised by the song, though. Every choice is in her zone. I'd like her to go different. - Big Mike, I haven't been the biggest fan of, but tonight I liked him very much. I think the song fit the style of what kind of artist he could be. I also liked the arrangement. - Andrew was kinda weak. Weird song choice, and it was bad advice to have him lose the guitar. Some of his words aren't crisp. It's like he gets lazy with some of the phrasing. - Katie sounded more "pitchy" than usual. I didn't much care for the song. - Casey's vocal and song choice was great, but he needs to connect a little more. He's holding a guitar a lot of the time and not playing. He should be more interactive. - Didi was okay, but I agree with the judges that it felt like she was playing a role. - Sioban was good. I like the songs that she picks, because she's hard to predict. A few notes: - If I hear "I had a lot of fun" said by one more contestant, when describing their performance, I'm going to puke. - Tonight was pretty bad, compared to last week. I think that the field has regressed. Best: Crystal Bottom 3: Paige Andrew Didi Paige was the worst, but I will pick Didi to go home, as there are so many better girls than her. Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Defense54 on March 24, 2010, 12:19:50 am Di Di has the most original voice out of all of them to me. I could pick her out of a thousand. She won't make it all the way , but I dig her and hope she doesn't go home to soon.
Andrew and Paige are the next to go. Paige was so off Key my dog started to howl. Casey and Crystal are the clear front runners. I am curious to see what she has next week and if she can do it without the guitar hippie vibe. She does that well though. Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Dave Gray on March 24, 2010, 01:08:15 am Oh, one more thing: Miley Cyrus was a mentor? She's 17 and never had a #1 hit, yet she's on #1 hit week. Insulting.
I'm sure she's a very nice girl, but is in no position to be mentoring singers that are probably way better than her. She should have mentored everyone to have a famous dad. Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: StL FinFan on March 24, 2010, 01:14:20 am 3 #1 Albums and 4 Top Ten singles doesn't suck. Yeah I know but my kids love her. She puts on an entertaining concert also. :D
Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Dave Gray on March 24, 2010, 01:18:21 am I don't think she sucks, but she's not worthy of mentoring these contestants. Miley Cyrus is a popular celebrity, cashing in on a character and a TV show. She's not someone built on having a great voice.
Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Defense54 on March 24, 2010, 07:54:53 am Its not about worthyness. 13 yr old girls watch this show and her appearance makes money all around. I'm sure that Fox is in with her record company and they are trying hard to advance her past her Hanna Montana image. Money money money......
Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Pats2006 on March 24, 2010, 09:06:44 am I think this is the worst season ever. I liked maybe 2 out of the 12. I see american idol on a down fall, and once Simon is gone forget it.
Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: MaineDolFan on March 24, 2010, 09:56:44 am Oh, one more thing: Miley Cyrus was a mentor? She's 17 and never had a #1 hit, yet she's on #1 hit week. Long ass post coming...warning...warning... I don't agree. The whole point for these people being on this show is to attempt to become a money making machine, not a critically acclaimed starving artist. I am not a Cyrus fan. That said, "number one hits" is such a joke of a term that it isn't even funny. I've been in broadcasting since the age of 13 when I baby sat the "Scott Shannon Nut House American Top 30" count down on Sunday mornings from 9am to noon until I finally stepped away and went per diem in 2008. I know a thing or two about this: Monitor of airplay to determine chart position did not start until the early 1990's. Prior to that, #1 songs were determined by reported air play. As a music director from 1991 to 1997, I am well versed in the politics of how this worked. "Chart" days were Mondays, the music director (MD) had until 5pm east coast time to report "spins" to the publication that they reported to, most notably Billboard and Radio & Records. Monitoring starting in select markets and, for a while, was combined with reported spins. Reported spins = whatever the hell you wanted to say. Leading to 5pm on Mondays I would field phone calls from every label of every artist I had on the station. Phone calls would generally go like this: Rep: "Dude, we are SO close on Garth. What are you calling him in at?" Me: "37." Rep: "Oh, man! Listen...I have WXXX, WXXX, WXXX, KXXX and KXXX on board at 50 each. If I can get you to do me a massive favor and up that, we have a shot at #1 this week." Me: "Oh, yeah? #1, huh?" Rep: "Hey, man. You know what I just thought of? Garth is playing a huge show in Dallas this summer. Know what would be super cool? Let's get a flyaway together for your spring book. Right? Right? Airfare to and from, two choice seats, back stage and maybe some walking bucks. How freaking cool would that sound on air???" Me: "That would sound awesome, we have zero budget for spring promotions." Rep: "I am sure I can pull this off for you, bro. Man, I really hope that number of 37 is a mistake. Can you pull your Selector report again and make sure it's right before you call R&R?" ^^And this was AFTER the payola scandal. As long as radio station WXXX gave away that Garth flyaway on air and mentioned "courtesy of Capitol Nashville Records" this was completely legit and legal. I was mentored by an amazing PD when I took my first music director gig at the age of 19. He was all about integerity and that was pushed into my head. I can't say that I was never personally overruled by my PD and inflated spins called in on artists on my playlist. I can say I never did it. If you were played 37 times, that is the amount we called you in at (Garth Brooks or not). Prior to 1990? Program directors and music directors were so filthy in payola that it isn't even funny. "#1 Songs" in the 1970's, 1980's and (somewhat) 1990's and beyond are riddled with songs that, by pure monitor standards, would not have been top ten much less #1. Even with the advent of monitoring, it hasn't changed things that much. Many of the artists out today are selling well due to promotional exchanges. Do you REALLY think a radio programmer worth his salt wants to spin Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" every 50 minutes? #1 songs are a fallacy. Judging someone's ability to mentor due to her lack of #1 songs isn't fair. How is true success measured? How many times did someone open their wallet? Two albums, "Meet Miley Cyrus" and "Breakout" both debuted at #1 on the sales charts. Forbes magazine listed her 2008 earnings at $25 million and $34 million in 2009. "Party in the USA" peaked at #2, "See you again" was top ten. Both songs were #1 on-line downloads. Billboard magazine ranked her #4 in the top female artist category in 2009 (above Kelly Clarkson who has had several "#1" hits). Her last tour was the third most successful, ticket sale wise, of any act. I'm not saying that she isn't young, I am not saying I am a fan. But this is a young lady that knows her shit and, at 17, has been around the block more often than any of this year's top 11 on A.I. will ever go (opinion). Selling out the O2 in London? Madison Square Garden? You can learn something from someone like that. My two cents, sorry for the #1 rant. Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: Defense54 on March 24, 2010, 10:45:26 am We are talking about Billy ray Cyrus. He had 1 big hit 20 yrs ago and now is a 2 bit actor on cable TV. if anything his daughter made HIM famous not the other way around .......give the kid just a little bit of credit? Title: Re: American Idol: Top 12 Post by: StL FinFan on March 24, 2010, 02:16:01 pm I don't think she sucks, but she's not worthy of mentoring these contestants. I understand your point, Dave, but American Idol is more a popularity contest than it is a singing competition. Right? |
