Title: Sound off: What do you think of Jared Odrick?

The newest Dolphin is Jared Odrick.

Thoughts?

I don't know anything about this guy, but from what I have read in the past hour, he seems like a dynamic player that could step into the role that JT played 5 years ago.  The big quick pass rushing DE that can hang inside, and pursue on the edges.

Not having watched him in college, can anyone tell me how he ranked on Penn State's defense?

I watched a few Penn State games...think we got a solid DE in Odrick. Not sure he's as dynamic a pass rusher as Jerry Hughes is, but more versatile, and definitely better at anchoring against the run.

Since it was a draft pick that brought him here, I still see Miami coming out of their first two picks with Brandon Marshall and Odrick, which I think is a nice start to addressing major needs with quality players.

I reeeeeally like the fact that we got back the early second rounder in the trade down with SD, because that is going to be another outstanding player, whether it's a NT like Brian Price, a safety like USF's Nate Allen, or an OG like Jon Asamoah or Vladimir Ducasse. I wouldn't mind cheering for Vlad Ducasse...he looks like a really nice guard.

I was looking at who was being Mocked to S.D.,saw Odrick...thought ok....Saw this,I like these positives, negatives break downs...

I think it's a solid pick, It's a better Value pick...I'd liked to had Earl Thomas or Dan Williams, but Love the idea of getting back a 2nd round pick. Now we've got a guy that should have a little less pressure to be great out of the box,and another player with the 2nd round pick (Which also IMO makes the Marshall trade even better....)

I see an article mentioning him with teams like the Ravens, and Patriots..and Think...Hmm Toy for Mike Nolan....

I'm ok with it....

I think he's a good value pick at 28, and not likely to be a bust.  He will be an upgrade and we need depth at the position, but I don't this was our greatest need.  I want to see what we do with the other picks.

It's great to get a high 2nd round pick for moving down, but it only has value if we draft quality.  If we piss away the pick, I'll be really annoyed that we didn't take Williams when we had the chance.  Good nose tackles aren't easy to find, and we need a good nose tackle with Ferguson's suspension (and his age).

I don't know the player specifically, but I said that DE was one of our main needs and I like the guy's size.  I'm okay with that.

Yeah........at 6'5" 304.  Thats a big Boy.

Do you think if Dan Williams was still there we might have went for him over Jared?

I think so.  Everyone seemed to be projecting us taking him with the original pick, before we traded down.  Had we done that and picked up a free 2nd rounder, that would've been sweet.

Yeah I punched a couple of couch pillows when Arizona snagged him. So close.......But that happened with Chad Henne as well. I forgot his name but there was a QB that went right before him that projected better and Chad was clearly the better choice. Hopefully this will work out as well.

Chad Henne was drafted 57 overall in 2008.  At 56 was a guy named Brian Brohm from Louisville who was picked by the Green Bay Packers.  So far, in his career, Brohm has played 2 games, started one, for the Buffalo Bills and is 17 of 29 for 146 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT for his career.  But, he did throw the pass that ended up being TO's 1000th career reception.

Who was better?

I'm not familiar with Odrick, however, I'm not the college guru that a lot of people are.  I do like the idea of trading down from #12 to get back the 2nd rounder that we lost to Denver.  Even better is the fact that it is a high 2nd round pick.

^^I'm pretty sure its higher than the one we originally had....

I hate the term "value pick."  Having covered the Patriots for too many years and watching them basically do what they did last night, I am weary of that term.  That term never means an impact player.

At first I was kind of ticked.  Obtaining the 40th is nice.  And the LB coming over from SD is actually a good special teams player.  Still, at 12, you can make a huge splash.

Then I started looking at the big picture - IE - this guy's size and motor.  I feel that football is won at lost at the line (both sides).  I think of situations with this kid and Wake on the line and then remember a little guy we signed by the name of Dansby.  I think about how there is a difference between a pass rush and a pocket collapse.  One is the sexy term, the other just as important.

This kid can anchor the run defense which, IMO, is a critical need for this team.  His size can draw a double team.  Something an O-line can't afford to do when Dansby is lurking around.

I like this pick.  A lot.

Yes! Brohm was the guy. Kilper was going on and on about him (how does this guy still have a job!?) and from what I was reading at the time I was hoping tthe Dolphins would snag him over Henne.  Thats why I worked the Midnight shift last night and Parcells makes more money in retirement then most do in a lifetime .  ::)

After reading Irlends comments:

On if Odrick was who they were targeting all along) - "Well you have your board set. He was the guy that - we stay with our board I'll just say that. We stay with our board.  When we moved down to 28 one of the things we wanted to do obviously was get our second round pick back. That was important to us. That was something we were looking to do, but if the player that we were targeting was there at 12 we were potentially going to take that player too. So it kind of worked out that we were able to move down and get another player that we also liked."

I thinks its quite apparent that Dan Williams was his guy. Shit happens I guess.  :P Almost got him, well worth the gamble.

Doesn't actually sound like it was Williams.  I think maybe it was McClain, and when McClain wasn't there at 12, they felt trading down was the best option.

"if the player we were targeting was there are 12, we were potentially going to take that player too"

They had a guy, he was gone by 12, so they moved down.

My personal belief on drafting in the first round is essentially this...

Pick a player with rare ability who will be able to contribute significantly in his first year.

or

Pick a player who will fill your most needed area of improvement and is bust resistant  ;).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really don't think we did either of these things.  I feel like he is a big, athletic guy but the pick is underwhelming to say the least.  The main positive is that he was picked near the very bottom of the first round, so at least we didn't reach much.  Plus, we did get a high second round pick which could definitely allow us to cover on of our obvious needs with an effective player.

Anybody else think this guy will just be another serviceable player that gets traded or released to free agency after his first contract is up?  All I see is another Randy Starks or McDaniel like player.

I think I'm a good bit more optimistic on Jared Odrick than Doc is... I believe he'll develop into a quality D-lineman who fills a definite need position and can likely step in and be an immediate contributor.

OK, so I was able to check out some tape on Odrick and all I have to say is...

ARE YOU F-ing JOKING!  WHY THE HELL WOULD WE SPEND A FIRST ROUND PICK ON THIS GUY!  He doesn't finish plays.  He gets nocked to the ground on single blocks.  He does nothing to demand a double team.

1st round, WOW!  I am a little pissed to say the least.  If we are going to convert to a 4-3 or plan on playing a ton of nickle then fine, but we better make something out of our #40 pick cause this guy has a crap-ton of weight lifting to do if he wants to have any significant impact in this league.

I'm happy with it.  I work in State College and I am not a PSU fan, but he was Big Ten Conference Defensive Lineman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

he'll be a guy who doesn't get called out during the game for his pass rushing skills, but will open the lanes for the LBs to make the plays. solid character and good work ethic, I think he'll be immediate impact

good value pick at 28th and plus we got our 2nd round pick back after we lost it during the marshall trade.  we pick 9th tonite (40th overall), plus we picked up tim dobbins (LB/ST player) from SD because of the trade.

I think the 1st round was a good day for us.  we could get Sergio Kindle today or even OLB Jerry Hughes.

I think it's solid and gave us the 2nd pick we lost.  we're picking 9th tonite and I think we'll get another solid player.

Hughes was drafted last night by the Colts, but Kindle and Mays are both hanging around.  I don't see either of them be there when we pick at 40.  I've seen a few post hoping we don't draft either Kindle or Mays.  That was with the first round pick.......do you still have the same reservations if one of them is there when we pick in the 2nd round?

NOTHING about Odrick suggests he can develop into a quality pass-rusher. If that's what the Trifecta brought him in to do, they should've picked someone else. He was good as an inside "straight-line" rusher on obvious passing downs in college, but doesn't have the strength, burst or agility to rush effectively in the NFL.

He's never played 5-technique, so who knows what that'll do, but his "measurables" all point to him being a mediocre pass-rusher at best.

To be honest, this pick reeks of "highest defensive tackle left on the board".

I hated the pick last night.

After doing research, I really like it. We have a potential Richard Seymour in the making.

This doesn't spell good news for guys like Merling and Langford however. I think Merling needs to explore his abilities at linebacker for him to stay on this team for much longer

I don't think it's out of line for her to speak about what she likes.  It's pretty clear that she doesn't have any decision-making power, so I'm okay with her saying it, as a fan.
