Posted by Mike Florio on May 24, 2010 2:43 PM ET After weeks of awkwardness between the Dolphins and guard Justin Smiley, the Fins have found a new home for the veteran offensive lineman. Per a league source, Smiley has been traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The deal hinges on Smiley passing a physical. It's not a sure thing, given rumblings that Smiley has a bum shoulder. Smiley joined the Dolphins on the first day of free agency in 2008. He appeared in 27 regular-season games in two seasons, starting 25 of them. Before that, Smiley spent four seasons with the 49ers. I liked Smiley,but understand his cost,and injury problems. Title: Re: Frowns for the Dolphins, the smiley era is over. Post by: Doc-phin on May 25, 2010, 10:42:36 am Smiley was a good locker-room guy and decent player, but got beat and whiffed on blocks too much to be getting the kind of money he was getting. Pile the games missed to injury on top and you can't be surprised we got rid of him.
He really seems to be the kind of guy that will have to move around from team to team for the rest of his career. He really doesn't have any upside left, but as a vet he can be serviceable until you find or groom a better player. Still, I appreciate his role in moving us toward our goals. So good luck Smiley! |
