Eleven months ago on this day, the Dolphins waive/injured tight end David Martin.

The former Green Bay Packer is apparently healthy now.  Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the team re-signed Martin on Friday. 

Martin averaged over 14 yards-per-catch in 2008 while totaling 450 yards for the Dolphins.  He missed all of last year with a knee injury but has a solid chance to make the team's roster at a position without any great receiving threats.

David Martin had stone-hands when he was here.  I don't know if this is good or not.

It's not good because it means that Haynos' hands are worse.

His stone hands are a non-issue. If he makes final cuts, he'll likely only be in to block in two tight-end situations.

He didn't have stone hands 2 years ago in Sparano's rookie coaching year.  I thought he was actually damn impressive that year (for a no-name guy).  I welcome the look at him although I was actually hoping to hear something like "Wow, Nalbone has really looked sharp so far in camp and may be pressing for a starting role".  Still time for this to happen but it isn't looking too likely.

This is a move of desperation because the Dolphins had a chance to address this need in the draft and didn't.  They thought their current TE's were ok and now they realized they thought wrong. 

What surprises me is that no one picked up Martin after the Dolphins got rid of him.

I'm kinda like you guys, I look at this like maybe it's not a good thing because we already have 4 TE's and we still find it necessary to pick one back up that we released over a year ago (even if it was partly due to injury)? 

However, at the same time, I'm also with Doc-phin--I thought that Martin was actually pretty good in our surprising 2008 season.  While his play frustrated me a lot at times during our miserable 2007 season under Cam, who didn't suck during that year?   :D ('least I can laugh about it now)  However, I thought he played much better the next season under Sparano and with Pennington as the QB, though I can only say that at the passing game level--not sure how he did in the blocking game.  So, if the Haynos/Nalbone/Sperry combo. aren't cutting it thus far in camp (or Fasano for that matter, because Lord knows his game regressed last season), I'm willing to take a flyer on the guy and at least hope he can play like he did in '08 again.

I remember getting infuriated because this guy would drop passes that hit him in the numbers.  But I might be confused with Donald Lee, who also sucked.

It seems to me, with some rare exceptions any TE that can catch a football ball sucks as a blocker and any TE that can block couldn't catch a cold. 

David Martin was a WR in college.  He shouldn't the the "can't catch a cold" type.

Both positions on Martin are correct somewhat. In Green Bay as well as on season in Miami, he had a very hard time with drops. His second season in Miami he was relegated to the second Tight End which limited his opportunities as well as the number of drops he had. The guy is a second Tight End and he plays that role well. Not many teams can throw to two of them, his addition means two linebackers in coverage possibly. Hopefully he hangs onto the ball.
