Title: One game in: How do you feel about Jason Taylor?
Post by: Dave Gray on September 14, 2010, 01:49:57 pm
I don't like the guy.  Maybe I'm a traitorous swine (or maybe he is).  I thought that some of my love for the guy might carry over when I saw him, but there is none.  Every time he was on the screen, I was like "screw that guy".  Normally I'm not vindictive, but there's something about the way he left our team that left a bad taste in my mouth and soured how I thought of him.

I am neutral about him, but most seem to have an intense visceral hatred for him now.

This.  I hope he has a horrible year.

I don't get why there is some much hate towards Jason Taylor as compared to other players who left the Fish.

Because he went to a rival?  I have never seen a bad word written here about Wes Welker.

JT - not given an offer to stay by the Dolphins; not a single other team calls him but the Jets, signs with the Jets.  As of yet has done nothing to help the division rival in any meaningful manner.

WW - is given an offer (in the form of a RFA tender); refuses the offer, signs a deal with NEP containing posion pills that makes it impossible for the Dolphins to match the offer.  He didn't just want more money or an offer of the length the Pats was offering, he wanted out of Mia and wanted to play for NE.  Since leaving the Fins he has greatly helped a Dolphin rival and in games done quite a bit to hurt his former team.

If I was a Dolphin's fan (which I am not) I would hate WW a lot more than JT.

Wes Welker was traded.

You didn't hear any of this talk when JT was traded to the Redskins, did you?

Wes Welker forced the trade.  He didn't have to sign an offer sheet containing poison pills.

He didn't force the trade.  MIA could have done nothing and gotten whatever draft pick MIA valued him at with the tender offer (I think it was a third).

I'm probably a bad person to ask though, since I don't hate JT.  He signed with the team that wanted him.  MIA wouldn't even offer him a contract.

I'll tell you why.

Jason Taylor was very outspoken here about hating the Jets.  He was part of those great rivalry games, and there are some nice photos of him giving the loser sign, heckling with fans, etc.  Of all of our players (since Brian Cox, at least) Taylor was the face of that rivalry.

So, for him to leave on his own (where I believe that a little bit of patience would've allowed him to stay on our roster) to play for the Jets, to me, is unforgivable.  It also paints him as a fraud, in my mind...and the very definition of a traitor.

Welker is an entirely different story.  First off, as much as some new fans might think, our Patriots rivalry doesn't touch our Jets rivalry....it's not even close.  The Pats only matter right now, because they are good.  The Jets rivarly is a deep-seeded hatred.  Also, Welker wasn't with us that long, he was underutilized here, and he never really bled Aqua and Orange like JT did (or claimed to).  Welker wasn't the face of our franchise for a decade.

I was rooting for him last night.  Not the Jets, but for him.  When he came up and made a couple of tackles I was actually happy for him.  Now when he plays the Dolphins I hope he's shut out, but the rest of the time I'll be happy for him.

I guess the difference is that I'm not a Jets hater like many of you seem to be.  I don't like the Jets, but I don't hate them.  Maybe it's just because I'm not from Miami and didn't become a Dolphin fan until I was maybe 13 or 14.  It's not ingrained in me to hate the Jets. :)

Plus the fact that he's great friends with Zach, married to his sister etc and the fact that I love Zach being from Tech and all gives him bonus points with me.

JT talked to Marino and Zach and asked their opinions of him playing for the hated rival.  They gave their blessings.  Since the Dolphins didn't want him, and he still felt he could play I'm not sure what else he could have done.

It sure does look weird to me seeing JT in green and white, but I have no ill will in my heart for him.  He did it the right way.

But the hatred at the time was Buffalo.  The Jets and Pats both sucked back then.  Our biggest rival in the early 90's was Buffalo by far!

Title: Re: One game in: How do you feel about Jason Taylor?

He played for NE in 2001, the year that they won the SB, 4 years after they went to the SB with Parcells.

And by your logic, we should hate Welker more than Taylor, as Welker went to the Pats (who have went to 4 SBs in the last ten years) while the Jets haven't done sh*t since forever.

If you primarily hated Buffalo in the '90s, you should hate New England now.  Hatred for the Jets is independent of record.

I didn't hate the Bills cause they went to the Super Bowl.  I hated the Bills because they always beat us.  The rivalry was strong at the time.

If you recall a few years ago, the Jets had beat the Dolphins like 8 or 10 games in a row.

I also hate the Patriots, but not nearly as much as the Jets.  I pretty much am indifferent about the Bills now, since they are no threat.

BUF vs. MIA from 1990 (BUF's first SB) to 1996 (Kelly's last year): BUF had 8 wins and 6 losses, with a 2-0 playoff record against MIA.

NE vs. MIA for the next 7 years (1997-2003): NE had 7 wins and 7 losses, with a 1-0 playoff record against MIA.

Or, if you'd prefer:

NE vs. MIA from 2001 - 2007: NE had 9 wins and 5 losses, with no playoff meetings between the two.

All of this is ignoring the fact that a) BUF never actually won anything, while NE won 3 titles and b) BUF did not have an undefeated regular season and come a couple minutes from greatly diminishing the Miami Dolphins franchise's greatest achievement.

So why don't you hate NE, again?

Jesus, people am I not allowed to have a dam opinion without having facts to back it up?

I have to have numbers to say why I hate one team more than another?  I just do.  Really...

I don't hate the Pats.  Even now, when they're good.  I hope they lose, but there is still some sort of admiration there.  I hate the Jets.  ...and I dislike the Bills.  But nowhere near the Jets.

I think that my hatred for the Jets is greater than all other NFL teams combined.

I hate the Patriots.

I hate the Patriots more than any other team in the league.

The Jets are up there as well.

I'm completely indifferent to Buffalo. I'd prefer they lose or win depending on the benefit to the Dolphins.

I don't hate the Pats. I want them to lose but its not hate...

I used to hate the Bill but since that rivalry has died down I don't have that deep seeded hate for them anymore.

Now the JETS are a different story. I hated them in the 90's and I hate them now. They can turn into a 0-15 team with no chance of beating the fins and I will still hate them.. I hate their fans, and I hate the fact that everytime I go to a Dolphin-Jet game I have to sit close to some annoying drunk New Yorker who talks crap about our city and our team.

To answer the question. Taylor is now a JET.. I hate him.

Sure you are.  It's when you try to justify your opinion with verifiable facts that you run into trouble.

If you had said that you hated Buffalo because you can't stand Marv Levy, fine.  If it's because their fans are jerks, great.  But if you're going to say it's because they "always beat us," well, NE's record against MIA (during their good run) is pretty similar to BUF's record against MIA (during their good run).

So if you are going to appeal to logic, you need to have some consistency.

I don't have access to records at the moment, but I remember that when I was in my first few years of high school ('92-'94), that Buffalo seemed to beat us when we needed a win, either late in the season or in the playoffs.  That time in my life was when I was most intense about being a Dolphins fan, so I'm sure that shaped by identity as a fan, greatly.

Because his fiancée is a Pats fan and it's not good to hate their team. We both have mutual dislike for each other's team, but hate is quite strong when you're sharing a house :)

The difference is that when Buffalo was good, so was Miami.  You said it yourself -

Buffalo beat us twice in the playoffs.  Once was a AFC Championship Game.  These losses were far more heartbreaking.  The Patriots never beat the Dolphins in the playoffs when they were winning.  The Dolphins were mediocre during those years and were expected to lose those games.

I still don't feel the need to justify this.

In addition, when the Patriots were beating everyone, the Jets had taken the forefront of the hatred, whereas when Buffalo was good, the Jets and Pats were off my mental radar screen.

Besides, IT DOESN'T MATTER.

I like the Chargers more than the Cowboys.  Do I have to provide facts of why?

"Far more heartbreaking" than 2002?  I don't think I agree with that.

Quote

In 1997, MIA was 7-4 and in first place in the division, one game back of a first-round bye in the playoffs.  NE beat MIA twice in the next 5 games, then beat them in the wild card round.

The 2002 debacle needs no recap.

Quote
I still don't feel the need to justify this.
Then stop trying to justify it.

It seems like your argument for hating the Jets is "they beat us a bunch of times in a row earlier this decade, when we weren't any good anyway."  So why do you hate them?  If BUF goes on a streak against MIA, will they now become the hated rival, while the Jets become unimportant?

If you need to cite records and playoff wins and all that to explain why you hate a team, I don't think they're really your rival.  Dolphins-Bills has been relegated to the same dustbin of irrelevance as Steelers-Raiders, Vikings-Rams, Bears-Giants, 49ers-Packers, Jaguars-Titans, and Rams-Bucs; the same dustbin that Patriots-Colts will be in a decade from now.  Real rivalries like Cowboys-Redskins, Packers-Vikings, Steelers-Browns, and yes, Dolphins-Jets don't need that kind of justification.

Maybe the analogy as below would better squash this entire discussion:

Bryan Cox : Buffalo :: Jason Taylor : Jets

Anyone remember Bryan Cox walking off the field, middle fingers a-blazin, in Rich Stadium?  Cox was outspokenly hateful toward the Bills.  Similarly, Jason Taylor (and Zach Thomas, for that matter) has in the past been outspokenly hateful towards the Jets.

Bryan Cox playing for the Jets, in my mind, would be the equivalent of Jason Taylor signing for the Bills.  Inconsequential and generally not much to talk about.

Better?

If you hate JT and/or Welker then you pretty much root for laundry.  Welker played hard for us when it seemed like nobody else did and we traded him in division.  That isn't his fault, it is ours.  I love his approach to the game and can't have anger toward him.  It bums me out every time I see him lighting up other teams but it isn't like I dislike him.

JT played admirably for us for years.  Like Hoodie said, he turned down a good offer by the Pats and took less to get back in Miami after we traded him away.  If he had forced the trade to Washington in a big way, we wouldn't have re-signed him the next year.  There was too much rumor crap going around in the media over that and we will never really know the truth but evidence points to Parcels seeing more value in trading JT than keeping JT.  Now JT goes to the only team that wanted him and was willing to compensate him reasonably and we hate him... B.S.  I can't stand the Jets, but JT didn't pick them over us or anyone else and I don't have any anger toward him for that.

Lets be clear...  Anyone who plays us is our enemy that day.  Anyone who plays for our rival is our rival.  Teams are teams but individuals are individuals and there is no treatury(sp?) in accounting for individual circumstances.

If you hate JT, I don't understand why.  If you have grown to hate Welker, I might understand considering his overwhelming amount of time on that team.  JT is more of a Dolphin than a Jet and Welker is more of a Patriot than a Dolphin.  I honestly believe JT didn't want to be in this situation but wanted to retire even less.  Shame on you if you think you have any right to say when a person should hang it up, that is their decision or the decision of their employers!

I just don't believe this to be true.

The Dolphins wanted to wait until the draft before they made JT an offer.  I think that is a reasonable request.  Also, I don't believe that no other teams wanted him.  I think that he chose the Jets.  Maybe their offer was better for him, which is fine, but as a fan, it wasn't better for me, and I don't have to be happy with it.

I'm not one bit upset about the Pats getting Welker.  To me, Welker wasn't the face of the Pats/Fins rivaly.

Dave, the second the Dolphins drafted Koa Misi, Jason Taylor would've been out of their plans.  Don't kid yourself.  The Dolphins wanted to see how they did in the draft before bringing him back, and they did fine by adding Misi.  Taylor would have become expendable right then and there, and would not have been offered a contract.  Further, suppose the Jets moved on without him, they would likely have called him back the second Calvin Pace went out injured.  As far as I'm concerned, Taylor to the Jest was bound to happen at some point.  He wanted to play, they wanted him, the Dolphins did not.

I have no hard feelings and actually was happy to see him sack Brady, once more for old time's sake, last night.
