i don't think anyone deserves it more than Special teams.

Title: Shame of the Game - vs. Patriots
Post by: dolphins4life on October 04, 2010, 11:17:54 pm
I'm not giving it to ST

I'm giving it to Henne.  That game should have been a blowout at halftime, but his picks killed drives.

Henne

Sorry, I posted the same thread

Henne's picks resulted in 13 NE points (7 direct, 6 when the defense got back on the field).

Special teams' failures resulted in 21 NE points (14 direct, 7 more when the defense got back on the field).

My SOTG goes to the special teams' coach.  We've been consistently bad all three prior games, and this game was just from bad to unspeakably horrible.

Henne is SOTG, not special teams

And no, Tepop has not hacked my account

That game should have been a blowout for Miami at halftime

Stay tuned, I'm in the the process of uploading my youtube video of this game.

Henne made a couple of bad throws on those two picks for sure, but he wasn't the problem.  The team was able to rebound from his mistakes.  (The pick 6 was all on Brandon Marshall)

The special teams was horrendous tonight, and the coach deserves his walking papers.  That was the difference in the game tonight.

I'd also like to give two honorable mentions to Ronnie Brown and Dan Henning.
Obviously, those two did not cause the major special teams break downs that cost the game, but they did contribute to the loss.

Ronnie Brown ran horribly tonight.  He ran right at Wilfork many, many times and jumped around instead of picking a hole when he managed to avoid Wilfork.  His play has been very bad this season.  In fact, he seems to have reverted to rookie form with all the dancing around he's been doing.  He hasn't played like a guy looking for a contract all season.  I don't know whose call it was to leave him in on the critical moments of the early 4th quarter, but it had better not have been my next goat...

...Dan Fucking Henning.  He gets mentioned because of his horrible play calling.  First quarter:  The Dolphins are driving down the field and on 3rd & 6 he calls not only a Wildcat play, but the worst possible choice...Ronnie Brown up the middle.  There's no way, ever, that Ronnie picks that up against any team.  The Wildcat was a poor choice for sure, but Henning served up the worst possible play in the situation.

Later in the 4th quarter:  3rd & 4.  What does Henning do?  Draw up the middle to Ronnie who was playing skittishly all night.  On the ensuing 4th & 2, the Dolphins come out with a TE to the left, 2 backs in the I formation, and 2 wides on the right.  That's okay, but then the Pats call timeout after seeing the formation.  When play resumes Henning proceeds to run a play out of the exact formation that Bellicheat just picked a defense for!!!!!!  Then Bellicheat ran the blitz to the side where the formation was at its weakest, hurries Henne who dumps it off to Ronnie who gains only 1 yard on 4th & 2.  WTF?  These 2 downs ended the faint hope the Dolphins had of turning it around.  Way to go Henning?  Why is such an experienced and respected OC making such basic mistakes at critical junctures?  I'm sure he made more errors, but these 3 examples really stood out to me.

Thanks for the official correction.

Guess what?  Even if we had scored touchdowns on both of those drives (which you seem to take for granted), and even if Henne never threw that last pick-6 (which, as stated, was really on Marshall), special teams still would have cost us the game.  It just would have been a close loss instead of a blowout.  Feel free to do the math if you disagree.

Ah...so many SOTG's to give out...I guess I'll do them in order:

1.  Special Teams...you would have to be clueless to not blame SPTs for this loss
2.  (in fact, closer to 1a. than 2) Chad Henne for not only is INTs, but staring a hole in everyone of his receivers heads before throwing it.  One has to do with the other.
3.  Dan Henning calling run plays when we are down by 20 points with 9 minutes left in the game...ARE YOU F-ing SERIOUS MAN!!??
4.  The defense for letting the Pats run all over you with a couple of no name RBs

Special teams. How John Bonamego is still employed right now is beyond me.

Today, John Bonamego is not my "good friend".

obviously the special teams coach deserves a lot of the blame, but there has been a lot of shakeup at the bottom of this roster. given that most of those players need to contribute on special teams, doesn't seem like there has been a good player evaluation for those specific roles.

The special teams is obviously the SOTG and Henne is behind them, but the special teams gave up WAY too many points for our offense to come back from.

Even every media outlet is saying special teams sucks.  Henne had a bad game, yes, but special teams COST the Dolphins the game.

Any other vote it blind hatred.

Your opinion is welcome at all times.

YOUR opinion does not supervent any other opinion on the board.

Please do not issue corrections to someone based on a subjective opinion.  YOUR SOTG was Henne.  You don't speak for the board.

Thanks.

John BONERmego.  If he can't teach his guys to hold their blocks, he needs to be replaced with someone who can.

Dear Special Teams, you are not supposed to be "special" as in Special Olympics.  That is all.

It has to be John Bonamego.  1 blocked punt in the red zone (resulted in TD), 1 blocked kick for a direct TD, and 1 kickoff returned for a TD.

It was an abnormally abysmal performance, and this was on the heels of several other poor weeks.

Henne had a bad game.

Special teams had such a  horrible game it could be called epic.

Anyone doubt that if ESPN or NFLN was to do a "countdown of the the ten worst special teams poor performances of all times" that the game would make the list.

Henne's performance might not make the list of 25 worst games by a DOLPHINS QB.

I wonder if our noticeable drop in special teams play (from a unit that was not particularly good to begin with) is because we had several quality players like Wake and J.Allen who were on ST but are now starters.

Even Sparano thinks Bonamego gets the shame of the game, obviously.

Someone I was driving with yesterday made an interesting observation: Almost everyone on our kickoff coverage is a DB or Safety.  We only have 1 or 2 linebackers running down, causing our guys to get held up in blocks -- they're fast, but what's the use if they can't shed a block and made a tackle?

Was just watching NFL Playbook on the NFL network.  Mike Mayock broke down the 3 plays that cost the Dolphins the game.

On the kickoff:  The players lost any sort of coverage lane, the entire left side of the kickoff team converged toward the middle of the field allowing Tate to run untouched to that side for an easy score.

On the blocked punt:  Left side of the punt team got fooled by a routine line stunt allowing the outside man to loop inside untouched.

On the blocked FG:  Players are taught to block down to stop inside rushers first, then move on to outside rushers.  The player on the left side chose to block the outside guy first.

Mayock said all of these mistakes are Special Teams 101, and I agree.  This is crap I was taught in Pee Wee football.  Perhaps if the Special Teams coach paid more attention to minor details like these, his unit would not have cost the Fins the game and the coach his job.

I would like to watch the replay again tonight to see if I can see the numbers of all those folks on the LEFT side of the responsible units.  I did notice that I saw Bobby Carpenter a lot in those replays.  I don't know if that's just a coincidence or if Bobby Carpenter is just that crappy to suck in all areas of the game.
