Title: Things you like to buy in Bulk, Things you don't
Post by: bsfins on October 25, 2010, 03:49:57 pm
Lately I've been weighing buying things in bulk...I started trying to eat breakfast in the morning, eat a bowl of cereal, and I only drink 1 cup of coffee instead of two...

So I realize I like buying in Bulk....
Cereal -The cheap knock of bags....I get more cereal, for a for a little more....
Power Compact Light bulbs - yeah they're supposed to last like 5 years, generally I get just over a year
Hardware - in general I'd rather buy a box of a certain screw, nut, washer, molly, whatever if I buy what I need plus a couple of extra.Something goes wrong I need more....

Things I don't like Buying in Bulk.
T shirts/Socks/Underwear - This sounds odd, this seems to be a problem more, and more lately...If I buy more than a 3 pack,it seems 1 or 2 have a defect, and it throws me in a conundrum Do I return the whole pack? throw out the odd balls? screw it buy smaller packs....
Toilet Paper/Paper Towels - I live in a tiny shack,I don't have room for 8,12,20 rolls of double roll extra quilted, super soft toilet paper...

What things do you like it when you can buy it in bulk, things you'd rather not buy in Bulk?

I like buying socks in bulk.

I am now down to only three styles of socks.

A little over a year ago I bought a dozen pairs of identical black dress socks, 3 dozen pairs of identical grey full size athletic socks (they are what I mostly wear) and about a dozen pairs of identical short white socks you wear when wearing shorts.

It has made my life considerably easier.  Matching socks is trivial, no sorting just grab two.  If I lose a sock I don't have an odd sock that doesn't match anything.  If one sock gets a hole it gets thrown away and there isn't a useless solo sock.

The problem with sock-matching becomes exponentially more difficult the larger your family gets (esp. once the younger members start having feet that aren't the size of an adult thumb). A couple dozen nearly identical black socks in the same load of laundry... not fun.

So... no more black socks for me.

In any event, I find that quality difference in socks is quite large and those available in bulk never seem to be really good.

Strange.  I also do the sock matching thing -- as few styles as possible.  Every several years (maybe 5 or so), I'll get rid of all old athletic socks and buy new -- a couple of packages of the same brand.

I like to buy toilet paper in bulk.  It stores easily and never goes bad...plus it sucks to run out.

I only have two styles of socks,I have to have Black socks for work, and then White athletic socks....The white athletic socks,I've bought the same ones for years (Size 14 foot sometimes size 12 socks aren't so good),but the last 3 packages (bought from different stores ) a couple were different lengths,a few the elastic part was odd (over stitched?)

The Hanes comfort soft Boxer briefs have had the same problem....One leg smaller than the other, loose strings, etc

Things I buy in bulk:

chewing tobacco.  It's cheaper to go to the res and just get $100 worth and I'm good for the month.

motor oil.  It's almost always cheaper to buy a case.

certain types of fishing equipment, namely plastic worms in different colors, hooks and sinkers

Arnold Palmers.  I went on a health kick and stopped drinking soda, naturally I'm going through a lot of ice tea.

Pantyhose.  The Mrs. goes through them and since I'm usually the cause, she makes me pay for them.

Bar soap.  1 bar lasts about 2 weeks in the shower and I always seem to run out at the wrong time so if I can get 30 or 40 at once, I'm a happy man.

Something I would never buy in bulk:

Spark plugs.  I only ever need 8 at once and even then it's only every 100k miles.
Dress socks.  I wear cowboy boots 90% of the time so I can wear whatever white socks I want underneath them.
Cereal.  I don't get up in time to eat breakfast because right now I'm working b-shift
Listerine/toothpaste.  I seem to get a full month at least from both.
Deoderant because I have a 5 year supply of it already, a mistake the Mrs. is not allowed to repeat.
