Title: How do you find new music?
Post by: Philly Fin Fan on December 08, 2010, 04:29:05 pm
We saw a performer on Conan last night who I've never heard of, and I fell in love with her voice and the song she played. I also saw a band last week that i've never heard of that i thought was pretty good.

So how do you find new music? I remember a thread on here once about music, and after awhile Frimp had commented that he gave the White Stripes a listen based on that thread, and was surprised he liked them.

I tend to find a lot of new stuff thru TV shows like Conan, since his guests are usually from the genre I listen to. I also find I like a lot of songs which are used as background music on some shows. I'll use google to find out what the name of a song was and go from there. I've found a lot of new artists and songs that way.

I don't.  It usually finds me.  I turn on the radio.  If I like what I am hearing I keep listening. If I don't I change the station until I find something I like.  Sometimes it is music I am familiar with sometimes it is new.

Pandora is a good way to hear artists you didn't know.

I was gonna say Pandora.  Going to live shows also does it.  There's usually 3-4 opening acts featuring bands I've never heard of.  Festivals are even better where there's a whole bunch of bands continuously playing.

My wife loves Pandora, and agrees with this.

I use Pandora, and Amazon to preview songs, albums.Like you mentioned, things I here in commercials,movies,T.V. shows.....

My only complaint with Pandora, after a few minutes I can be 3 genres away...Earlier today I went from Queen to Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis in about 10 minutes....I like lot's of variety, but a lot times no rhyme or reason to me...I can only take Pandora in doses..

I sometimes will make mixes for friends and have them make mixes for me.  That's pretty good.
I also browse youtube of people that I like, and in the comments, people will mention other bands/singers.  If I've not heard of them, I'll look them up.

I also will try Google searches of multiple bands that I like, and sometimes you'll see people making lists of their favorites.  If they have several of my favorites, chances are that they will have others that I like, but haven't heard of.

between Pandora and Sirius, there's a good flow of new music.  But, I still feel like sometimes there's great stuff going under the radar that doesn't make it that far.

Thats the stuff I'm talking about- the under the radar stuff.  I like finding new bands I've never heard of before. Sirius XM U (Channel 26) is good for a lot of new indie stuff. Its always interesting to hear a band on there, and then about 6 months later, hear them on Alt Nation once they've become more main stream.

I usually just walk around the streets of South Florida, and every time I see someone wearing headphones, I sneak up behind them, pull the headphones off their head and say "Whatcha listening to there, buddy?"

I find that I discover more new music and make more new friends that way...

A buddy of mine tried that once. He now has a restraining order against him, and is registered as a sex offender. ;)

Life's full of little trade-offs... ;)
