Title: Henne
Post by: stealth3ltt on December 19, 2010, 04:14:49 pm
How can he look so lost today?   this is his 14th game this year,  nothing should be new here.  For the first three quarters of this game he looked like it was his first time on the field.   missing easy throws,  can't throw a pass in the air longer than 8 yards.  throwing that pick.  i'm at a loss about him,  do you just let thigpen play the rest of the year and waste all your draft picks on a big name?

Henne is lost that's the problem!

Rich Gannon said in looking at film of the Dolphins he could not believe all the miss reads Henne makes.  Especially on blitz or pass coverage protection.  You could see it really well today and last week... he didn't even notice the safety walking up on a blitz. ???

It does not help when he does get in a rhythm like on the second to last drive and we bring the fing wildcat into the game on second and 10. I am not defending him but the coaching staff is as much to blame for the offensive struggles as Henne

Because he sucks ass, along with the entire coaching staff, right down to the equipment manager.

henne's rating against the blitz is actually outstanding all year long.

2 years is enough. Time for a QB change.....again. We should just swing for the fences and trade several 1st rounders for the right to move up and draft a QB who is good enough to be taken in the Top 3. No more 2nd rounders. No more veterans coming off of injury. No more Tyler Thigpens. Get a franchise QB.

Henne is not the answer.

IF THERE IS ANYBODY WHO STILL BELIEVES HE IS, SPEAK UP NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE!!!!!!!!!!

Time to look elsewhere.  Where, IDK, we'll have to wait and see what free agency or the draft holds.

In the meantime, let's let Tyler Thigpen play these last two games.

All season I kept my mouth shut in hopes that Cahd would make believers out of us but it is time to say goodbye chad you stink.
I cant get over how poorly he manages the clock and in the 14th game of the season come on Chad time to wake up.

My problem with calling out Henne is that he's a minor problem compared to the anchor that is Henning. Play-calling is absolutely atrocious and any young quarterback is going to be killed by that. Henne has done "okay".

Aside from the sheer stupidity of the plays called at times, what really seems to be missing is a "probing the defense for weaknesses" aspect. It feels completely missing. I see other games, opposing coordinators are testing each other here and there... different patterns, formations, fakes, whatever. All kinds of stiff, trying to find a weakness. It don't get that sense when I'm watching the Dolphins.

Henne may suck, but he's the best option we have this year and probably next year.  We'll see if he can develop under a new OC whether we like it or not (unless we get a new HC and he cleans house [hopefully not]).

Yeah, he usually get's sacked every time the opposing team blitzes! ::)

Just like today the safety walked up Henne didn't even notice it as he was looking to his right before the snap.  At the snap he continued to look right and the safety came in untouched from his left side.  Had he even looked left he could have called a protection audible which is exactly what Rich Gannon was talking about.  Too many times he misses that same type of read!

This team has way too many holes to spend the entire draft on one guy.

Normally I would agree, but I am tired of waiting for a QB to come. Besides, our secondary is young, our O-Line is good when healthy and our defense is top notch. I mean, the Patriots have more holes than us and they are the best team in the NFL because of Brady. I think the time for quick fixes is over. We went a whole decade without a QB who gave us more than one good season.

Actually, I think it's the coaching that makes the Patriots who they are.  I agree with you about the quick fix thing, but we also need to stop looking for Dan Marino part 2 and give somebody a chance to develop.

The thing about Henne's int that makes it even more stupid was.....

It was third and long and he threw it to a short guy.  He wasn't going to get the first down anyway.  The only thing that COULD have happened other than us having to punt after the play was the pick.  If he was going to throw it that guy, he might as well have thrown it away, because either way we were going to have to punt after the play.

Henne has done enough to deserve a chance under a new OC. I can't help but feel the decline of our running tandem is a factor behind the strange playcalling and the constant need to bring out the wildcat.

Title: Re: Henne

It's pretty obvious Henne has regressed. We can argue why all day but the fact is he was much better last year. Personally I think it is because he has been coached "not to lose" rather than to win and having a little bit of the gunslinger mentality is needed in the NFL.

With that said I would love to see how Henne works with a new offensive coordinator before we throw him away like Tampa did Steve Young. The Bucs were 4-28 under Young. He threw only 11 TDs and had 21 interceptions with less than a 55% completion rate. The Bucs traded him to San Fran because they felt he was a bust. Now his bust was placed in Canton, OH. on the same weekend as Dan Marino.

Even Marshall kind of defended Henne yesterday after he apologized to the defense.
 http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2010/12/brandon-marshall-apologizes-to-miami-dolphins-defense.html

Marshall didn’t point fingers at anyone in particular on offense. He even went as far as saying Henne did “a great job with the plays that were called,” and continued to say Henne has the arm to “spin it.”

IF THERE IS ANYBODY WHO STILL BELIEVES HE IS, SPEAK UP NOW OR FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE!!!!!!!!!!
I still believe it.  At least I still believe that he MIGHT be with a different head coach and offensive coordinator.  I believe the real problem is Sparano and company.  Henne shows moments of looking real good, but he's terribly inconsistent.  That MIGHT be just Henne, but compare him to the team as a whole.

QB's:  Look good at times, but inconsistent.  Not just Henne, but ALL of them.  Only Pennington looked good 2 years ago and only then against VERY suspect opponents.
WR's:  Look good at times, but inconsistent.  Marshall has had his worst year as a pro.
Specal Teams:  Look good at times, but inconsistent.  Every week there's a different weak link.
CB's:  Look good at times, but inconsistent.  Smith can't catch an INT to save his life.

See a pattern here?  This team is poorly coached, there's not other way to look at it.  He doesn't get the most out of his players, across the board.  Go down the line and there's not a single unit you can say has been consistently good this year.  Not one.  That's a reflection on the coaching.  Sparano has to go.

Here is an excellent analysis of Henne from an opposing cornerback.  The problem isn't Henne, it's the offense as a whole including the coaching.

whether or not you want to blow up the coaching staff as well, it's fine either way. until you find a much better qb, no coaching savior is doing anything better here.

Well he didn't blow in this game.  Carpenter did.  Like it or not Henne got Carpenter in for 4 FG trys and he failed to convert a single 1.  Only 1 of the 4 was really an unreallistically makeable kick, all the others were makeable.  Carpenter had a 0% completion percentage.

Henne on the other hand had a 75% completion rate.  Henne can only do so much.  He was getting the ball into the hands of the (supposed) play makers on the team and they didn't make enough plays.  Henne doesn't kick the FG's.  Henne can't make the pass AND get yards after the catch too.  He can't run the ball or open holes for the running backs.  He can't catch interceptions or prevent 18 yard touchdown passes on 3rd and 18.  Henne did his part in the game, the rest of the team didn't fare any better than Henne.  His lone interception was because the ball was knocked out of his hands when he was throwing.  In my opinion anyone blaming Henne for this loss is clearly in denial.

You look at the Tom Brady's and Peyton Manning's of this league and you see something you don't see with Henne.  You look at most of the successful QB's in the league and you see something you don't see with Henne...

AWARENESS!!!

Can he be coached up in this area?

I don't know... but, it's one of his biggest flaws.  When you see Phillip Rivers, Matt Cassell and other QB's walking to the LOS they are constantly surveying the defense.  If a LB or safety walks into the box they notice and make protection adjustments.  Henne never seems to notice LB's or safeties walking up on the LOS.  He's always looking to his primary receiver side at the snap of the ball which is why he never notices blitzes coming from the opposite side.

I could understand if many of these blitzes were delayed or hidden but, these defenders are walking up as he should be looking over the defense and he's not even noticing! ???

Henne made the right read and throw.  Even Sparano said he did.  What do you want Henne to do?  Talk about not being able to make Chicken Salad out of Chicken Shit.  This is what this coaching staff is asking of Henne.  Make something out of NOTHING.

Although I think that the coaching and OC leave something to be desired. I just think that Henne is not smart enough or process information quick enough to be anything than a backup in the NFL.

I'm not talking about a check down on a two man route.... Of course he made the right read what other read was there?

I'm talking about on the blitzes that he took sacks on!  He didn't even notice the safety on the LOS one play pre snap because he never looked to his left. That's is his fault and he got sacked the same way against the Jets last week and he was looking right at the Jet's LB on the LOS unaccounted for.

You see Brady, Manning, Rivers, Brees even  Sanchez pointing those out to his line to change pass protection.  You never see Henne making any pass protection calls just check downs!

And yet the coaches actually called him out for calling the incorrect pass protection on a blitz just last week that got him sacked.  If he doesn't call the pass protections, why are the coaches saying that he is?  Could it be that in fact he IS calling out pass protections like every other QB in the NFL, but that his offensive line isn't picking them up like they are supposed to?  It's also possible that he's calling them out incorrectly like the coaches said, but that CAN be fixed.  I don't believe it's a case of him simply not noticing these things as much as it's a problem with the execution.  He's not the first QB to struggle with these kinds of reads, nor will he be the last, I think he can improve on it.

I'd be much more worried if the problem was that he didn't have the arm strength or accuracy to make NFL caliber throws because that's not typically something that QB's get better at with practice.

Chad Henne through (nearly) 2 seasons as a starter:

YEAR TEAM G CMP ATT PCT YARDS AVG TD LNG INT RAT
2009  MIA 14 274 451 60.8 2878 6.4  12  67 14  75.2
2010  MIA 13 266 430 61.9 2952 6.9  14  57 16  77.6

Drew Brees in his first 2 seasons as a starter:

YEAR TEAM G CMP ATT PCT YARDS AVG TD LNG INT RAT
2002 SD 16 320 526 60.8   3284  6.2  17 52    16  76.9
2003 SD 11 205 356 57.6   2108  5.9  11 68   15  67.5

But sure..write off another quarterback before he has a full season as a starter in the NFL..try and find Dan Marino 2.0..HE'S OUT THERE SOMEWHERE..THE 12th YEAR IN THE SEARCH IS THE CHARM..gimmie a break..might as well leave Henne in and see what he can do, and I reiterate, WITH A FULL SEASON UNDER HIS BELT..but honestly it doesn't matter who the QB is with the way our division is playing..get used to the 3rd place finishes guys..same old Dolphins

Generally I've been a supporter of Henne all year, however his play has gone backwards this year.  Not sure if it's his fault, the coaches fault, or a combination.  Not to mention Ronnie Brown has been stinking it up all year!!  It's easy to say go out and get a franchise QB, in reality it's much more difficult.  More likely to end up with a bust at QB, than a franchise QB.  I'd rather see the Fins trade away the draft for a running back, more likely to have this type of position player make a difference.  What bothers me about Henne is his disastrous 2 minute drill play, taking a sack when in field goal range, and not picking up the blitzes.  I think with proper coaching he can improve in these departments.  The Fins need a new OC and a quality QB coach.

So since they called him out last week that erases all the other times he doesn't make any protection calls at all? ???

Like that sack by the LB I was speaking of right in his face!  He didn't make any call at all and the LB came in untouched and sacked him...  same yesterday he made no call or protection change the safety walked right to the LOS and came in untouched but Henne stepped into the nose tackle who got the sack.

I like Henne's arm but he needs to start paying attention to the entire field not just the primary receiver side...

It merely proves that he does call protections even if you don't believe he does.  It also doesn't erase the bad plays, nothing does, even him calling protections. Every QB in the league gets sacked on blitzes.  Every last one of them.  Why do you think defenses blitz anyway?  If it didn't work on anybody but Henne, no one would use them except when they play Miami.

No, what it proves is he has made a protection call ( it was the wrong call at the time may I add) doesn't mean he calls them when he needs too or regularly.  Teams blitz because you can't give QB's time in the pocket to just survey coverage defenders can only cover so long...  and yes it's effective If you blitz because the QB doesn't have time to look or wait for a receiver to come open.

Miami allows sacks on 6.1% of passing plays, compared to the league average of 6.4%.

That's not exactly terrible. And while I don't doubt that you can point to Henne on certain individual plays, the past month has been horrible compared to the rest of the season (the middle part of which was VERY good in that respect), which seems to correlate more with poor O-line play than any sudden change in Henne's ability to recognize a blitz.

Don't get me wrong I'm not blaming Henne for all the offenses sacks...  I'm just saying he misses some of the easier reads.  You should notice a safety walked up on the LOS or a LB standing on the LOS unaccounted for!

I've been watching him closely the last few weeks and a lot of what Rich Gannon pointed out during the broadcast is the same stuff I've noticed.  He needs to work on seeing the field and his awareness!

He needs to survey the defense better when walking up to center.  Glance to the non play side before snap more often...
