Title: Hypothetical situation
Post by: Frimp on January 21, 2011, 05:31:32 pm
Lets say the Super Bowl is Green Bay and Pittsburgh, and Gene Steratore is the ref. Let's also say that a similar scenario that happened in Week 7 with the Dolphins and the Steelers happens in the Super Bowl and costs the Packers the game, what do you think the NFL does to Steratore if anything?

I have to believe the NFL is smart enough to not let him ref that game

So do I.  I doubt he will be refing the AFC Championship either. This is just a hypothetical situation.

Nothing - the NFL may request that he retires, behind closed doors.  But the NFL would never publicly go against their officials.  Its bad for the sport and the league, since the officials represent the league on the field and enforce the league's rules.

More likely, I think, is what MikeO said.

I think if the hypothetical situation that you describe actually happened, then Steratore would probably face some sort of punishment...or demotion, and the person who decided to assign Steratore to that game should be kicked squarely in the nuts.
