I just saw Az mention that his son turned 16....It seemed a lot like a "dad" thing to teach your kids to drive....

My mom taught me the basics,my Brother taught me the how to back up to stuff,pull trailers/boats...Drive a truck...Then I took Drivers Ed.
Then I spent a little over 2 weeks in Chicago to learn how to drive in the snow.The problem is 1.)Chicago has much better road crews,then they do here 2.) People here drive differently...

So who taught you how to drive? Mom? Dad? Someone else?

I drove both my mom & dad a lot. It was also mandatory that we take driver's education back home so I had to ride with instructors quite a bit. Dad taught me how to drive a standard transmission (How odd is it that we call it standard).

I too took a Drivers Ed course. Mostly my Mom taught me because she was home more and had more free time than my stepdad did. He would take me out now and then and had more patience with me than my Mom. I will credit my Mom for making me learn a map of the entire Phoenix area before setting my out on my own though. It really helped a ton and my son is pissed about it now but he too is learning the entire layout of the valley before we set him free. I know he has done some driving with his Mom and Stepdad, my wife and I both take him out often and even my Mom has taken him out so he is learning and getting a lot of road time which is awesome.

My dad taught me how to drive when I was 13, in an old jeep wagoneer during a number of trips out into the mountains of N AZ to cut firewood. The other car I drove before I turned 16 was a humongous aircraft carrier of a car...a 1967 lincoln continental with the suicide doors. The whole thing leaned in every turn...it was freaky.

Mom and dad taught me how to drive, more mom than dad. My dad tried to teach me standard until I got frustrated, I said fuck it all. Automatic ever since.

The problem I had,was I already knew how to drive, I've been riding 4 wheelers,driving tractors,and somewhat driving when I lived on the farm...I had to learn how to drive with other cars around,curbs,paved roads,traffic laws,etc,etc..... :D

My mom taught me most of the basics. Then my dad taught me to drive and LOVE standard. I still drive stick to this day.

I can't imagine driving an automatic. I've only owned 1 automatic and got rid of it within a year.

The last time I drove one (friend's car to the store), I actually stomped my foot down where the clutch should have been when I went to start it.

My mom and my dad the firs time around. Dad was much better than Mom. Then when I got a stick shift, Dad taught me that. I haven't driven a stick in a while on the advise of my orthopedic but I liked the better gas mileage I would get

I taught my niece to drive.  I am returning the favor.

I taught myself at the video arcade and on the bumper cars at the amusement park. 

Okay, not really, but I did spend almost in quarters at the video arcade before I got my license as driving lessons cost.  I did drivers ed and practiced with Dad.  Mom got hers about 5 years after I got mine so I once was the passenger seat when she had a learners permit. 

So I'm guessing that you've never lived anywhere with serious traffic.

I'm from Dallas-Ft. Worth and spent my fair share of time stuck in traffic. Then I made that horrible commute up 95 for 5 years. I still live off downtown Fort Lauderdale and the beach which is pretty much bumper to bumper particularly since I live off the main drags.

My next car will still be a stick.

I don't mind a stick,I drove a tractor trailer for a bit,then after driving it all day I'd get in my automatic pick up....it wwas a relief to be in an automatci,especially after unloading appliances all day.

I don't like a standard in the winter though...Shifting when it's cold...not for me...

With your recent professed appreciation of porn, this doesn't surprise me in the least. :)

I don't get why that makes a difference at all. Actually, you should want to shift gears because movements helps generate heat.

^^ but the gear shifter is usually is like an ice cube,and never really warms up...So then I have to wear a Glove,or gloves when I drive...and I hate that....It's like being cold them grabbing an ice cube...It's always been my experience with stick in the winter.

I don't know why anyone would want to drive a stick in bumper-to-bumper traffic.  It's incredibly annoying and tedious.

I never even think about it. If traffics that heavy, you just hang in 1 or 2.  I even drove stick when I was a driver for my dad delivering stuff around down town Miami all day.
