Title: Bow Ties
Post by: Dave Gray on April 13, 2011, 12:27:16 am
Do any of you ever wear ties sometimes when it's not at a wedding or stuffy event?  I wear a tie to work a lot of the time, but I don't always want to look like a stiff.  I try to change it up with a casual sweater, suspenders, cuff links, ...whatever.  And I'm thinking about trying out wearing a bow tie.  I have kind of a fat neck on occasion, so it might be unflattering.  Has anyone ever worn a bow tie when it wasn't part of a tux?

I also need to find some belts and stuff to change it up a bit.  It's hard to make a few slacks and shirts look fresh over and over again.

I don't like the bow tie look. Unless you are in a tux I see it and immediately think "Nerd". If you think wearing ties make you look like a "stiff" I think the bow tie is the extreme of stiffness. As for belts, I'm not sure I have ever paid much attention to anyone's belt. It just isn't an eye grabber for me. I feel your pain. When I was in an office I was feeling the same way about my clothes. Unfortunately the only way I found on getting any "real" changes were to go out and spend money on other clothes.

I used to wear a tie when I taught at Quincy high school.  I started doing it when I first started teaching at GCCC.  However, I quickly discovered the laid back life down here.  Now I don't even wear dress shirts to class anymore.  The business casual look (khakis and golf shirts) is acceptable for professors here.

Yes, I've worn a bow tie, but not in a long time. I dig on the bow ties though. Classy, but quirky. Professional, but distinctive.

To tie this in to the TV series thread chatter about Dr. Who... In the first episode of the "new" Doctor (Matt Smith), Dr. Who is asked about the bow tie he's wearing. His response was "It's a bow tie...bow ties are cool."

I also feel that Dave chooses his clothes based on how he will use them as props.... Have no idea what I'm talking about? I'll let Dave explain :-)

I have never worn a bow tie ever in my life. I don't think I'm ready to graduate to one yet :-)

^ What Lee is referring to is that we have an inter-office IM client here at work.  It has a place for a picture of you.  I have a webcam on my laptop at work, so it allows me to easily change the picture in like 2 seconds.  I like to take 2 pictures per day (but don't always get around to it.)  My first picture in the morning is just a normal picture of me.  Then I like to take a 2nd picture at lunch that's a little kooky, and often incorporates parts of my outfit.  For example, in my current picture, I took my beige sweater and wrapped it all around my head and made a sign that says "Death to Creditors".  ...I also printed out our company logo and wore it on my undershirt, then took a picture ripping open my button-up, like Superman....stuff like that.

Can we see the pictures?

^ They don't save.  They just go straight into my IM client.  I'll have to screen-cap them as I go.
