Title: John Beck
Post by: CF DolFan on August 26, 2011, 10:01:48 am
I don't know if anyone is paying attention but John Beck certainly doesn't have that "deer in the headlights" look he was tagged with. He made some very nice plays last night against the Ravens. Never know with Shanahan but I bet He gets his second shot at starting this year.

I still saw a little bit of that DiH in him last night as well.

If John Beck "wins" more than one game this season as a starting QB, I will be genuinely surprised. I actually think that Grossman will have the starting job for the Skins by week 3.

Yes, I have been following Beck since he left the Dolphins and wish him well. I was quite excited about him when we drafted him and was disappointed that he was never given a legitimate chance here. While it's taken longer than I expected, I think he'll make a decent QB for Washington.

I always liked Beck.  I felt he was too raw and didn't get time to develop.

We'll see what he can do, I imagine he will make Dolphins fans wish he was still here.

Although I have followed him because I am interested in seeing how things pan out for him, I refuse to read too much into anything anyone does in the preseason. Vanilla offenses and defenses and so many player switches. I will be paying attention to the regular season and I wish him well.

Too raw? The dude was a 26 year old rookie! ;)

^^ Rookie.

You can be a 40 year old rookie, you're still a rookie.

Yeah, but if you're a 40-year old rookie (or 26 for that matter) and "raw" is still used to describe you, then you are summarily boned.

John Beck is a complete waste of a roster spot. He blows and so does Rex Grossman.

Rich Gannon's best years were his mid thirties.  He was pretty much a no one and then took off under Gruden even winning back to back MVP awards.

I'm sure he's not the only one but the quickest one to jump out right now.

^^^ But did you "ever" consider Rich Gannon to be a "raw" QB? No...he was just a career backup until he got the opportunity to start. He was never raw.

^^And Beck was thrust into the starting position on a 1-15 team as a rookie when he shouldn't have been because there was no one else on the team worthy of starting either. That shouldn't be held against Beck.

I'm sure that Gannon was very raw as a rookie, fortunately he just didn't have to play.

Gotta agree,Brian.I watched some of those games when the Dolphins had Beck, and with their line back then,I don't think Montana or Elway could have helped you much, lol. It was take the snap and run for your life, kinda hard to make plays like that.I don't see Beck being a star in this league, but I think he's better than what he got with the 'Phins.

I hope Beck wins the job and does well.  While I wouldn't hava called him "raw", I'd have called him rusty his rookie year.  We should remember the guy took a year or two off from football to complete a Mormon mission before entering the draft.

I always hoped he'd pan out for the Dolphins, and if he works out in Washington, it will be further evidence to the "get me a new quarterback, NOW!" Dolphins fans (you know who you are...) that you can't give up on a guy after a year or two.

This is true, but Beck's relative success in Washington thus far may have more to do with his coach than anything else.  Beck didn't have much coaching help or a team to work with in Miami.

Outside of preseason action, Beck hasn't taken a snap under center for Washington in a regular season game yet, so not sure what "relative success" you're referring to.

The fact that he's still in the league is a "relative" success for Beck.  The fact that he is in the running for a starting role only adds to his "relative" success.

It's "relative" because he's not done anything yet.

He hasn't been cut yet.

Beck lost the starting job to Grossman it was announced today.

Beck needs to find a new line of work. Football ain't his thing.

Does he still get a paycheck?   :)

Beck is what most peole thought he would be in this league;a serviceable backup. To make the comment"football isn't his thing"is,I would say,a stretch. He played qb at a major university and is still making a living at it,albiet as a backup, but the guy still gets a check from the NFL.Heck, even A.J. Feeley made the cut with the Rams this year....talk about living a charmed life.......

I really haven't seen any proof that he can be a serviceable backup...or a serviceable "anything" that relates to playing QB in the NFL.

We'll chalk his demotion up to being a "relative success" though. At least the Skins didn't put a bullet in him and bury his body out in the woods.

he hasn't been a serviceable backup or starter one day in this league. On his 3rd team and he is now being beat out by Rex Grossman. The guy can't play

Grossman didn't exactly excite anyone in the preseason. Just because he gets the start for game one, it's a very precarious position. One bad game and Beck could be starting.

I was only referring to your comment,"football ain't his thing".Had you said that Beck is one of the worst qbs in the NFL well,I might agree,he hasn't showed much.I was simply pointing out that if the guy is still on an NFL roster, obviously someone that is much more qualified than you or me to make those decisions thinks football is his thing or he would not be.Do I think he is a great player with alot of upside,no.I think he is a phone call away from playing in Canada.

Pat White was on an NFL roster and football wasn't his thing either. If you wanna be the lone person on the "JOHN BECK BANDWAGON" or start the "JOHN BECK FANCLUB"....go for it!

john beck sucks... has nothing to do with miami, his coaching at miami, being thrown into the fire too early, etc...

he's just not an nfl qb.
