Meriweather New England Patriots and coach Bill Belichick cut Milloy just before the regular season. The Bills -- New England's Week 1 opponent -- swooped in, quickly signed the safety, and Milloy helped pound the Patriots, 31-0.

Could history repeat itself eight years later with another solid safety: Brandon Meriweather? I think it's worth a shot for the Miami Dolphins. Miami will be underdogs against the Patriots on "Monday Night Football."

New England just released Meriweather on Saturday. Not only is Meriweather a good player, but he carries plenty of institutional knowledge about New England's defense, which appears to be using more 4-3 concepts and alignments this season. (Belichick won't confirm that, by the way.)

Wouldn't the Dolphins' coaching staff benefit from learning New England's defensive keys and tendencies from Meriweather? Couldn't Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne use an additional edge entering his dual with NFL MVP Tom Brady?

If a motivated Meriweather can have the "Milloy effect" against the Patriots in Week 1 -- leading to a Miami upset -- that alone would be worth the investment. On top of that, the two-time Pro Bowler is an upgrade over what the Dolphins currently have this year.

Pass.  If NE cut him, they had to have had a good reason.  Why sign a guy only in hopes that he can help you beat the Patriots?  What else did Buffalo do that year?  That blog writer is very short sighted.

What is up with all the Pats crap? These guys will not bring that much knowledge, and we still have to get through the Jets and the rest of our schedule. Too much focus on just one team, even if it is a division rival.

I guess our 4 or 5 Super Bowl wins in the last few decades (NOT), has made you both so complacent to suggest that the Fins wouldn't need any kind of an advantage headed into Monday's clash with our rival?

Like it or not, the Pats are the team we are striving to become, not the Jets nor the Bills.  We have a long way to go to reach that level, that swagger AND yes adding a few of their discards might actually benefit us! :-*

The Patriots have something the Dolphins don't :  A really good front office and coaching staff that make the right player choices and get the most out of those players.  They know their shit.  Picking up their cast offs is not going to make up for that.

Thanks StL Fin Fan...great insight!  Sometimes a stronger opponents castoffs are better than our own teams backups...in this case you take from the wealthy.
Not about Belichek , Kraft or anybody...just about improving our 53 man roster.

it all starts up front, as in the front office, with smart people to pull the strings on players and deals.  like StL FinFan said, we need to strive to be like their front office, not pick up scraps from these teams.

I'm not a Pats fan, nor a freakin Stillers fan, but I respect both their front offices and they usually make smart, sound decisions. I wish the Phins front office good say the same.
